I am in the Boerne area and am wanting to grow some tasty heirlooms. Any suggestions from those of you who have grown them in Central and South Texas? Thanks.
I would say it's too late for indeterminate tomato transplants in south Texas, my recommendation would be to wait a month and plant determinate tomatoes for heat for early fall harvest. Tasmanian chocolate, phoenix, heatmaster, heatwave, Black Sea man, Marglobe, black truffle, solar flare, patio, summer set, homestead, etc.
I agree it seems a bit late. That being said, my favorite are German Johnson, I think they make the best grilled cheese and tomato sandwich. They get big enough a slice covers the whole piece of bread and are very meaty. I am trying Cherokee Purple this year and have been happy with them, not huge fruit but there is a bunch of them.
I planted a Homestead #24 this year, and really like it. It's a smaller compact plant, but has been relatively fungus free. Not the biggest tomatoes, but they're really good. My Tycoon plant is taking over the world and producing several softball size tomatoes.
It seems like our first fall frost date keeps getting pushed back. I picked cherry tomatoes on Christmas Day last year, so I wouldn't worry on being in a big hurry to get plants in the ground. If you want to do fall tomatoes, wait until August 15, get a heat tolerant variety, keep them well watered, and cover them with some shade cloth to protect them. Once the daily highs drop into the mid-90s, you can remove the cloth.
I do agree with this, smaller varieties handle the heat much better. Clelebrity/early girl is the biggest you should go in south Texas imo for longer and better harvests in this crazy heat.
