I'm fixing to throw my stuff in the truck and head west. Without a destination in mind. My wife and I need time apart and I need some quiet to clear all the noise in my head. So with that being said…. Any recommendations on trout streams out in the middle of nowhere away from people? I just need somewhere I might find a hole in the wall hotel or Airbnb. Terrible weekend/week to do this on…I know. But it needs to happen now.

I have some places in northern NM I can send you but would rather not post them on the internet for the whole world to see. What's an email or other way to message you?

Go through Red River, Cimmeron, on your way to the San Juan in Farmington. Good fishing all the way. Go north to Colorado from there.

Have fun

Appreciate it.

I forgot to mention. I'll be using spinning gear and lures so if anyone doesn't want to give up a spot to someone who doesn't fly fish… I totally understand.

The alpine lakes in the Flat Tops are starting to be really good fishing right now. Look up Big Fish, Shamrock, Mirror Lake Happy to direct you where you can go and logistics.

Sorry San Juan is Fly only. Other places should be good for spin tackle.

If you need to clear your head now might be a good time to take up fly fishing.

"They say you forget your troubles on a trout stream, but that's not quite it. What happens is that you begin to see where your troubles fit into the grand scheme of things, and suddenly they're just not such a big deal anymore.". John Gierach

We like the area around Lake George, CO. lots of lake and river access. Most streams are OK for spin fishing if you are using artificial lures and barbless hooks. The lakes allow bait. You can catch big trout from 11 Mile reservoir using bass crankbaits in crawfish colors.

The people at Tumbling Trout Fly Shop and the general store are helpful for fishing info.

Also highly recommend Trout Routes App. tons of info on access points, etc. and will keep you from trespassing without realizing it.

Or if you cast as bad as me...not.

That's when you enjoy looking at the beautiful scenery.

A few years ago I got this tattoo which is a takeoff of the Banksy painting of the guy throwing a bouquet of flowers rather than a Malotov cocktail. Someone asked me about it recently and I told them it was me on my backcast after a missed hook set, just before I got tangled up in a tree behind me. Of course there's a single scale hooked on the fly.

Middle Provo River about an hour from Park City. Fished it a couple of years ago in June- lots of big browns.

Thanks for the suggestions. I think I'm headed towards Cimmaron. We took a family trip to Ouray pre-kids for us and had some fantastic fishing in that area. I've always heard my Dad talk about mule deer hunting the flat tops back in the 80's so may go check that out. If I get a really wild hair up my ass I may go check out this trout stream in southern Wyoming I've always heard him talk about as well where they'd catch one big trout after another. We'll see where the road takes me.

If you are headed to Cimarron take a bigger rod and some jerk bait type lures. You can catch big Pike from the shore on Eagles Nest Reservoir this time of year.

You can hike up the Los Pinos river just outside of Durango - I think there are parts of that river that allow spin fishing. I did a short overnight hike there one time - its really nice and quiet up there but not too far out of the way.

You won't be far from Almont where three rivers converge and has some great fishing: the Gunnison, the East, and the Taylor rivers all converge in that area. Jason Booth with Gunnison River guides is fantastic and can teach you how to fly fish if you want. A float fly fishing trip in that area is one of my favorite things to do.

Well I picked a terrible weekend to take a hiatus. Every hotel was booked. Finally made it into Red River at 11pm last night and best western had a pricey but available room lol.

Could fish here in town but I've been looking at where the rio grande and red river come together. That looks like hike I may be way too out of shape for but damn it looks fishy.
