10 year old fence needs to be re-stained. I've just about convinced myself to do it instead of hiring someone. The house has been painted and I now think a black stain would look better.

Yes, I am first going to replace the top cap and a few other boards that need it.

What I don't know is what to do about the wire. I don't want to disassemble the whole fence to remove the wire. Do I just spray it and it will look fine? Do I attempt to paint the entire wire? Will the stain not really stick to the wire?

Any advice on products and methods is appreciated.

Use a hand held pump sprayer with wood stain from HD, Lowes, ETC. I wouldn't worry about getting it o the wire. I think it will temporarily stain it, but it will eventually wash off with rain.

You're going pressure wash it first, right? It doesn't have to be perfect but I would to try to get off the peeling old stuff. Just had my log cabin style house stained. I didn't do it but watched them do it. They had a sprayer but the suggestion above should work fine.

Yes, pressure washing is part of the plan. I've got a Wagner power sprayer. Is that good to use vs. a pump sprayer?

Can use a lithium battery powered paint gun to apply the stain. Wood Defender Transparent Fence Stain or Seal Once Nano+Poly Penetrating Wood Sealer with Polyurethane - Premium Waterproof Sealant.

I have one of those too. They work great, but my problem with them is they hold such a small amount in the reservoir. I stained a fence before a couple times and just used the pump sprayer like the other poster suggested. You can cover a lot of ground with that. If I recall correctly, I diluted it so it would spray better.

The pros doing my house had an industrial sprayer, but that was an insane amount of stain. I'd try both to see what you like.

Wood Defender has a great looking black - neighbor did it. Also I think Wood Defender really is a better product - higher solids content etc.

I just stained a quarter mile of split rail cedar with Cabot brand from Lowe's and it looks good
