As long as your aortic root isn't too dilated, replacing the ascending aorta itself doesn't add a ton of time to your operation, assuming your head vessels aren't involved and/or aneurysmal. If your root is involved, they'll have to reattach your coronary arteries to the aortic graft and will likely do what is called a bentall procedure. Lots of possibilities. Stay positive and be glad you didn't need this operation sixty years ago. Any big heart center does these multiple times a week.

since you are a likely candidate from where you have lived and outdoor activities, get tested for Alpha-Gal Syndrome. Caused by Lone Star Tick bites and can cause severe allergic reactions to many anti clotting agents. collagen bandages, gelatin and other things commonly used in surgery derived from mammals.
I have it and it is important that the Dr's know about it before any procedure.

You got this! I had similar repair done (cow valve instead of mechanical) at 55. The recovery is work, do the breathing and walking. The biggest issue for me was comfort while sleeping. I suggest a recliner if you have one, if not I tell people to rent one. Getting in and out of bed after surgery is tough for a week or two. You will make it, but lying on your back can be uncomfortable.

God speed buddy.

AC you got the right answer
Too young for a TAVR or a biological valve
And even though a lifetime of Coumadin will suck, a mechanical valve will last the rest of your life

The ascending aorta cannot be repaired / replaced without open surgery so if it is truly aneurysmal this is your only option

Ned coronaries checked with Cath before surgery so this can be addressed simultaneously

Glad you found good care in WV

Could have helped you find someone in Charlotte or Cincinnati, but it looks like you are in good hands
