I saw a group off of Old Reliance Rd a couple years ago. Had to stop, back up and make sure I saw what I saw. More than likely someone in my area trying to release some to get them started again but they were there. Neighbors say they've seen them on a rare occasion as well. Native or pen raised? Who knows but they sure didn't act tame.

In McIlhenny's book written back in the 1800s, he noted that the largest turkeys he witnessed were between the Trinity and Brazos rivers.
In the late 1980s or a few years later, TPWD expanded their reintroduction of the Eastern turkey into Grimes county, particularly TMPA land since they controlled vast acreage then. They failed to release enough toms (their admittance) as well as failing to inform adjacent landowners ( they only advertised it on a couple of radio stations).
To my knowledge, the reintroduction in that area was unsuccessful. When we took over a lease near Gibbons, a previous hunter left a box blind on the property and recorded his animal sightings and harvest on the inside wall. One of several notations regarding turkeys indicated he " saw 7 turkeys this morning, shot 2 of them."
Those weren't the only ones he killed.

Saw some once in the late 90's out near Ferrill Creek Rd and was told that somebody had released some but there weren't truly wild ones any longer.

I have a ton in Southern Milam County about 15 minutes north of Caldwell.

I have about 100 acres of Oak Forrest that they roost in

We used to have a spring season but tpwd stopped it this year

We started seeing them a bit ago in Washington county so they are likely in Brazos, just not in large numbers yet. I haven't looked in a few years but don't think they allow hunting them in Washington county

Saw a flock in Harrison county (far east Texas) which was a total shock - even though they have crossed the Sabine , I have never seen any sign and to my knowledge, there hasn't ever been a stocking program that touched this county.

I have a story to share that makes more sense now but I didn't believe a couple years ago when my neighbor relayed this. We had a heritage turkey that was a dead ringer for an eastern - Jake that had just started gobbling and strutting. Neighbor asked my wife if we had a turkey because he saw gobbler with hens in our pasture. We had no hens but our gobbler was never seen again after he shared that story. I assumed that one of the locals just sniped him from the road but finding the wild flock makes me believe he just left with the hens he had pulled in. Would be interesting to understand how long my domesticated bird survived in that situation - he was already roosting on his own so maybe he made it.

I was told the turkeys on the south end of Lake Somerville near Shepherd Mtn Ranch are private released birds from many years back.
