I am going to do a concrete overlay. Comparing spray deck (cool deck) to stamped concrete overlays.

I'm told the spray deck does not last and needs attention within a short period of time. It wears in high traffic areas for example, and can discolor from moisture.

What say you TexAgs?

Used this on a public pavilion project a couple of years ago due to an idiot contractor storing steel on a new slab which stained the concrete.

They did a good job in sealing in the shrinkage cracks at the same time. So far nothing out of the ordinary and are considering it on a couple of more older slabs.

I cannot recall the price since the contractor was responsible for it.

In for this. I would like to do something on our back porch eventually.

Specifically what product are you looking at for the spray deck coating? There are about 20-25 different manufacturers of similar products out there.

This is what pool contractor quoted.

ETA, was told acrylic overlay is the way to go for longevity. Trying to sort all this out.

I can't say I've heard of that brand specifically, but generally speaking for exterior applications acrylic is better than epoxy or polyaspartic because it handles UV better and is cheaper and faster to apply.

Epoxy or polyaspartic are harder and more durable but aren't as durable against long term exposure to sunlight.

Thank you for the comments.

So I understand, your opinion is acyclic stamped overlay is more durable than what I am calling spray deck?

Acrylic is quoted as 2X price to spray deck. $8 vs $4 respectfully.

Spray deck tends to hold dirt. Had done that has lasted 12 years and looks okay.

I like Polyurea coatings better.

Regular cool deck for is nice and cool, but will get mildew in it because it had voids, which is why it is cool

I have cool deck and it is mildewed in some spots. I tried to pressure wash it it didn't come up. I think I need a bigger pressure washer over an electric one

Stamped concrete gets hot as hell. Same thing for pavers

Pool contractor here, spray deck tends to be cooler than a standard concrete deck or any concrete overlay product.

I haven't had any issues with the material we use coming up in the past few years.

The installer said they use lighter colors and textures to combat the heat. Its not as cool as spray deck, but its comfortable

We too have cool deck that looks dirty all the time….mildew and such. We tried power washing it and it just made holes that kept getting worse. We signed a contract today for polyurea/polysporatic (sp) coating. (Like they put on garage floors). We looked at several pools in the area that have it and really like it. They add a more rough texture to the ones they install around pools. Good luck!

I had Kooldeck installed about 10 years ago. After about a year it delaminated all over the place and the contractor (an Ag mind you) basically said "tough chit."

I had Carvestone installed in 2023 by Allied and so far it has been great. It does get hot in the summer but I just spray it down and it cools off quickly. I had one small area that delaminated. Called Allied and they had a crew out within a week to repair it. They showed me where the prep was not quite right in that spot, apologized and fixed it. No charge. They do a beautiful job also. It was expensive, about twice what I paid for the Kooldeck, but worth it.

Yeah had cool deck around a pool in Port A, always washing the sand out of the cracks … but it was easy on the feet in the super hot summer sun… kind of give and take…
