Pretty sure I can answer that for him given he's fishing with an 84 year old - boat fishing.

If boat fishing, it's really hard to catch fish with artificials. I'd say go to Port O'Connor and load up with live shrimp. Fish the jetties and spots in the ICW from Caracol all the way down to The Sanctuary. You'll catch fish in the ICW if you throw live shrimp near the rocks and pilings in the ICW. It's fun and easy with either really young or old fishermen.

Good luck! DM me if you're there and need assistance at the boat ramp. If I'm there I'll come down and help you launch if you need it.

Live shrimp on a popping cork.

Fish a spot for 15 minutes. If you don't get a fish move on. Everything eats shrimp.

I have fished cut mullet off the bottom and caught big reds, and used crab as well. When the bite was on, I have caught using nothing but fishbites. After my last trip, I am convinced that shrimp is the way to go. The location is more important than the bait.

Might look at Saltstrong for locations.

If your boat fishing in POC w shrimp go fish the openings going into Shoalwater bay, fish the biggest opening down towards the south end of shoalwater, park boat in Espiritu Bay facing shoal water bay and you should have luck. We have caught reds, trout, and sheep's heads, and black drum on shrimp in the water when the tides are moving in or out of shoalwater bay, they bite better when the tides are flowing in or out. My buddies 80 yr old family friend needed to boat fish as well so we would take him there.

May be too late but there may still be plenty of sheep's head in the big matagprda ship channel jetties going into the ocean. Fish w small hooks and small pieces of shrimp near or around the area where that weather station is on the right side…. "My friend" used to tie up on it… not sure that was legal .. oops

Live shrimp and croakers at the PoC jetties is your best bet. Should have good shots with trout, redfish, sheepshead, and black drum.
