I have several trees that have T posts for stabilizers. They are mature enough that the posts are no longer needed. I have tried to remove them with a post puller but unsuccessful. I believe they have grown into the roots. Should I cut them below the surface or is it safe to remove them with a tractor and chain? And no I didn't install the posts

If they're actually tangled in the roots, I'd just cut them off below grade.

Push them back and forth in all 4 directions for a few mins using all your weight to widen the hole its in, should pull out then.

^^^ This might be good advice given the user name.

Wrap a chain around them and lift 'em with a hi-lift jack.

I didn't get that far. I have a high lift jack. I was mainly curious if the removal would compromise the trees?

I have cleared old fence lines with t-post around red oak, white oak and hickory trees that were old trees and never hurt the trees, don't know about young trees.
You can use a chain and an older car bumper jack or high lift jack.
Or the easiest is a decent size tractor with a front end loader. Just double hitch the chain toward the bottom of the post and the other end hooked to your bucket.
Lift it slowly. If it doesn't come out easy then back up a little then forward a little as you are keeping up pressure on the post.

I have had some that I could not pull out with the tractor. I ended digging down about 6" or so and cut off with a cutting torch.
If you are in an area of oak decline I would cut them off and not take the chance of damaging the trees.
Might see if a arborist or horticulture guy on the OB could chime in and give their thoughts.

Spare tire up against post. Chain over top then down to bottom of post. Straight line pull from tractor pulls up with tire as a fulcrum. Be careful this is dangerous....

If loader won't lift it the 3 point has a lot more lift capacity usually.

PSA: Tree stakes should be removed no more than a year after install. Remove all the tape that could girdle the tree as well. Also shut off or cap the bubblers same time frame.

This is the way.

I use one of these. Makes it fast and simple if you have lots of t-post to pull….especially if you have a tractor or skid steer.

How about just hooking a come-along to the top of the post, and use that plate on the bottom. Then just ratchet it up onto itself?

If you can't get them out, you might think about cutting them below grade with a sawzall (if you don't have a torch). Don't waste your time with the bi-metal blades. Spend the $15 on a "carbide" blade. They work great, cut fast, and last.

I usually just wrap a chain around the post and hook it to my front end loader. The t post will come out. It may or may not be with the tree but it will come out.

How close are the posts to the trees? If they are close enough to be into the structural roots I would cut tpost, other wise I would pull them with a high lifter, and then cut any damaged feeder roots with shears so they have a clean cut.

Trees shouldn't be staked for more than a year. While you're at it make sure the root flare is showing and cut any girdle roots
