Finally got around to doing this. It is a piece of Milo wood we got on a family vacation to hawaii last year. We saw the bone hooks everywhere, and the boys liked them, but they were all the same. So we decided to get a peice of wood and figured i would take a stab at carving him a hook from it:

this is the first of 3. We went last summer and the summer before, and got wood on each trip. One year they both got wood for hooks (so i still need to make 2 more hooks) and the older boy we got wood for me to make a chess set from... The chess board/box is easy enough, but i am working on my consistency with making chess pieces. These pieces are just test pieces from mesquite until i get good enough i can make a the actual pieces from the mango/koa wood we bought... Consistency on the pawns is going to be a challenge, and the knights intimidate me... i may have several scrap knights laying around that i didnt like and kept starting over...

bought wood. They are pretty strict about not wanting raw wood (specifically with bark) to leave or enter the islands.

I also made picture frames from a few other pieces. The top being Koa, the lower the same as the hook: milo

Beautiful job on the frames, I never thought of making something like those.

Also, I love the picture of your feet in the sand. For some reason, when my daughters were young, the always took pictures of their feet when on vacation. It carried over to adulthood, even now in their 40s. Last fall, they all met at a cabin in West Virginia to see the leaves change, and they took their traditional "feet" pic. It is nice to see others do the same.

Might be a better idea to do something else for the knight.

Horse heads seem incredibly difficult/I know they are rarely done well.

Awesome work as always. Just spitballing but would it be possible to make a mold for the knight then use sawdust collected from making other pieces mixed with a binder, "cast" the knight?

i wish, I will make a good knight! it may kill me and take some time, but i want the chess board/set to be a keepsake for my son and he can play with his kids/grandkids. I've looked around at a lot of different styles, and i am not going to do anything extravagant.

I think with some practice, I could make some from this style that i am happy with:
