As in, how long can you store intact pecans and they stay fairly good to eat? I have had some I know to be 2-3 years old that seemed to be quite good still. I was curious if there's a sort of general "use by" time interval for pecans still in the shell and stored for future use?

I'd say 2-3 years

We buy 30# every year from a local orchard and keep in the freezer (recommended for long term storage by the seller). I haven't noticed a decline in quality over the 1-1.5 years it takes us to use them.

We've kept SHELLED pecans in the freezer for a long time with no noticeable decline in quality.

I know, not what you asked. Just putting it out there.

If you can keep them in the freezer, they will last longer. If they go rancid, you will know.

Eat your nuts like a man and don't fret about how long they "keep".

pecans (and chocolate) are so much more refreshing to me when eaten frozen.

In shell will start going rancid in 3-4 months if kept in a normally heated home.
Pecan quality is affected by temperature, air and moisture. So keep cool, dark, and dry and they may keep 6-8 months

We have frozen, vacuum sealed pecan halves that we grow that are 10 years old and excellent quality. We shelled them as soon as moisture content was low enough and vacuum bagged them immediately.

I always shell them, put them in freezer bags, and put in the freezer. Good as ever after 3 years, but haven't ever had any last long enough without being used to say any longer.
