Went down to MX late last Wed to hunt Carmen Mtn Whitetail. Beautiful location and an absolutely great hunting experience. Crossed at Boquillas ... which is a hoot ... and took the ferry across the border.

The Mountains in the background of this 1st photo are the Chiso's mountains across the border. The hunting property is ~500,000 acres ... You hunt from the valley floor up to 9,000 feet which is forrested.

The photo below is a Euro Mount on a "monster" Carmen Mtn rack. They're a little smaller than a typical TX whitetail and the rack is considerably smaller.

A buck during the stalk at the top of the mountain (close to 9k feet altitude. Quite the ride to the top). We spent about 4 hours on the ground particular day and saw a lot of doe's and smaller bucks...no shooters. This is really good hunting.

The Sierra Del Carmen's start at the Rio Grande at Big Bend National Park and extend southeast for about 72 kilometers (45 mi). You drive about 20 miles on dirt trails, then pick up a paved road for another 20; and then enter the propery and come back north about another 10 miles to get to the camp.

A great mule deer property as well.

Saw this bear track going up the mountain one day

And saw the bear coming down....

There's a border station on the US side about 400 yards or more above the river. You carry your gear down the path to the "ferry operator". It's $5 to ride across. On the way back into the US they check your passport. There is a consulate on the Mexico side in the village of Boquillas; but it was not manned/opened currently. So I crossed, we got in a car and drove off to the camp.

This is at the bottom of the path just short of the river. After crossing, you can rent a mule and ride into the town to eat or shop

Wes Mundy, Double Diamond Outfitters...but the hunting is all handled by the Mexican staff. It's a good facility and the guides were great. My Spanish is terrible, but communicating with the staff was relatively easy. Great food as well...clean and comfortable

5 total days of hunting. On the 4th day we were about 6 miles from camp up about a mile. Parked in a big hollow that has a trail that cuts thru the mountains to the river valley on the far side. Started glassing and waw 3 does and a buck about 1/2 way up the mountain. Got the scope out and he looked like a good buck (average size). We started climbing.

They were moving from right to left and up the mountain. We had to cross two ravines and then the steady incline. As we neared the first plateau, they buck disappeared behind a rocky outcrop about 2/3 the way up the mountain. We had to back track a bit to keep from pushing the does. We moved further left and got a view to the backside of the outcrop. The buck was pushing left and up. We moved up to the next plateau...at that point we had to set up. There was nothing but open ground between us and him.

The does were lagging about 150 yds and to his right...he was now about 95% of the way up the mountain now. The distance to him was ~200 yds at this point. I was huffing and puffing and wiping my glasses from the climb trying to settle my heart down. He stopped climbing and just moved right to left about 20 yds below the ridgeline...he finally stopped to mill about. He was a long way from where we had originally seem him.

Was using their Sako Mark IV, 30.06, 155 grain Winchester ammo and a rickety set of shooting sticks. He moved up a little more and stopped...he was quartered to the left. I wasn't going to wait on him to go higher at this point.

If you squinch the 1st photo you can see the truck below down the hollow. We had to drop down off the plateau we were on and go up and get him. We were at around 6,000 feet.

8 point...a little bigger than average for a Carmen Mtn WT.

JT, I am still willing to be adopted by you and your family and really don't mind being your Sherpa on these hunts just so I can tag along.

The first thing the locals tell you is this is more like Coues Deer....

In this location, it was early in the rut. So our timing was good. We saw one that was bigger the day before, but he was paired off with a doe and they were about 400 yds out when we saw them; and they moved away steadily into thick bush and disappeared. We spent about an hour looking for him then and came back thru there late in the day for another hour but had no luck.

Quail every where. It was getting a little late on Sunday, the air was still and it was very quiet...we busted a covey and I almost lost my enchilada lunch.

I guess you're right. About 4500' to about 8k elevation it would be Mearns in the piñon/oak country. Mexico is awesome, it was probably all three.

I would have to defer to the quail experts on here to make that call....all I can tell you is there were two distinct kinds and in different parts of the property .... one smaller variety and one larger

I gotta be honest, the most impressive thing to me is that after your Africa trip and everything you killed. the fact you still enjoy these more "modest" hunts really tells me that you have a pure appreciation of the outdoors no matter what the event/animal/locale, which is really impressive to me

I thought the same thing.

Looks like a pretty awesome adventure to me.

JT you are running out of big game. Gonna need to switch to bird hunting. Lots of variety to chase.

Ridiculous how they lose you.

Sometimes with Coues I'll be looking at some through binoculars and look away at something else.

When I come back to the spot, they're gone! Then, maybe focus changes a little or there's a tail wag and WTF, they're in the same spot, never moved! Damndest thing and happens a lot even after years of doing this.

I swear some animals were put here just for me.
