A few of us have mentioned it and I'll mention again. Get eye dominance checked by someone that knows what they are doing.

My son is a master class shooter in the sporting clays world. I've seen a lot thru his development and other shooters. Best thing to do is for a left eye dominant person shoot a left handed gun. Gun fit is key.

I believe in making an informed decision and that may result in a left eye dominant person shooting a right handed gun.

Do your kids shoot with both eyes open?

Shotgun is far less important than having a lefty version than bolt action. But would be nice. I did not know they had left handed shotguns until recently. Maybe the next one will be lefty so my friends see what its like to get shells ejected at their face.

Never shot a left handed shotgun/rifle in my life.
As a left handed person I just dont know any different.

If he is used to a righty gun it keeps his options more open long term.

I've always wanted to try a lefty shotgun....maybe it would change my world!
I finally swapped when I got a semi auto and and love it now. The only real advice I would give is to make sure the you get a gun tht allows the safety to be Moved to the left side so he learns how to use it correctly without affecting his mounting swing. I don't realize just how awkward I was doing it until I finally got the safety on the left side

In shotgun sports, it's vitally important to understand that If the gun mount does not line up the barrel with your dominant eye, you will miss a great deal of targets…by feet, Not inches.

Also, with kids, particularly boys, be prepared for eye dominance to shift as they grow up.

Make sure you know if he is left eye dominant and not just left handed. I am right handed but left eye dominant. As a kid I couldn't shoot worth a darn until my cousin had me try shooting lefty after which I started hitting everything. My uncle bought me a left handed shotgun a year later (age 13) and it remains the best gift I have ever received. I went from being embarrassed to shoot to suddenly loving the outdoors and shooting/hunting. It is my fondest childhood memory.

Long story to say, I would get him a shotgun based off his EYE DOMINANCE not handedness.

Edit: I like shooting a left handed shotgun because it keeps the smoke out of my eyes. It also just feels special. Like I am using a gun for me and not a gun made for someone else.
