Howdy!

Hope everybody had an amazing end of 2024 and welcome to 2025. If you follow the ski thread, you know most of the Rockies are low on snow so far. This could become a problem next summer but it's still too early to worry much. In the short term, the weather has been beautiful and fishing has been fun!

If you make a trip to ski Purgatory or Wolf Creek and want to schedule a day on the water, give me a shout.

Here's some pics from January 3rd. Disclaimer- Your results may vary, my wife is a badass! We even had a few dry fly eaters but LRHF flubbed the hook sets (looked like the Aggies repeatedly failing on 4th and 1).

Looks like fun. I was supposed to go for the first time in 2021, but COVID caused the state govt to say no to fishing the week before we left.

Some beautiful fish!

In the winter do you use mostly nymphs or streamers?

A little of both. Yesterday was mostly leaches, eggs and worms (San Juan River version of a pigsticker). We had a blue winged olive hatch in the afternoon. Wife had two eats stripping a leach. Streamer fishing in December was tough but hoping to throw more in January!

The governor of NM is special, pretty sure she rode the short bus….

When you are ready to try again , hit me up if I can help! I'm happy to talk on the phone even if you stay with a lodge and don't need any help or are planning a DIY trip.

Sounds good. Definitely a trip I want to make, but my flyfishing has been mainly East Texas ponds for bass and panfish.

Winter is absolutely the best time to avoid huge crowds but can be great to miserable if storming. Winter fishing is when all the locals/ guides find time to float/ wade with friends and family. We get slammed all summer with tourists but it's a bit hot. My favorite time of year is late September and October! The middle of March can be great spring fishing but the weather can be on the cooler side.

People either fly to Albuquerque or Durango. I have a friend they has some vRBO options about 15 minutes from the river. I also guide for Rainbow lodge for those that want a lodge experience and request me as the guide.

Most families tend to stay in Durango so the rest of the group can shop, narrow gauge train etc.

Here's a couple of old pics from the San Juan.

My son Brien and I went up there over spring break one year. We had a great time but cold, some snow.

Melissa and I went another year in April. Not as cold as March but still pretty chilly (thank you).
