When I was in Germany in 1990-1993 my unit switched from the old 2.5 ton truck is to the newer 5-tons.
To answer your question, yes they can drive a lot of places. Definitely not indestructible (at least when a bunch of GI's are turned loose with them).
They definitely have a smoother ride that the 2.5 ton.
