We saw one in Magnolia yesterday. Normally I see them in South Texas, but not this far north. The pic below is just a stock photo of the type we saw (there are several subspecies apparently).

Little further north but see them here between Rockwall and Terrell all the time.

It seems they are doing the white wing dove expansion.

Okay, we're now north of Dallas. Anybody seen 'em in Oklahoma?

They are all over my neighborhood in Pflugerville. Never really thought about them anywhere north of here.

I have seen them in Runnels, Shackelford, and Stephens Counties. They are hard to get close enough to take a decent picture of them with an iPhone.

Saw my first ones 5 years ago or so while shredding pastures out in Brenham. They're moving north quickly.

Saw a pair on our property a couple of mornings ago. We are just north of Cedar Park (north of Austin). They were perched at the top of one of our big old live oaks. If you've never heard them - they make an odd croaking noise. Got Sully's attention (our Golden) and he started barking at them until they flew off.

This photo seem to be the most accurate distribution map I've seen published

Montana and Canada are a good bit farther north than I ever would have imagined!

Idk, but Lee County should be as dark purple as the graph goes. As thick as buzzards.

Was it at the toddy house or what?

Yep, they were always on the gut piles at the ranch

I'm 60 and I've seen them in north central Texas my whole life. An old ranch manager in knew in San Saba called them Mexican Eagles and shot them onsite because he thought they preyed on his goat.

Interesting because I saw my first Bald Eagle on that ranch when I was about 18. Glad he didn't shoot that one.

here in Crawford, I bet for every five buzzards you see one caracara.

The predation of caracara on newborn calves is way overblown.
Gonzales County has more caracara than anywhere else and has for decades. No one pays them much attention.

Cool birds to watch fly but they are not my favorite bird. On a roadkill one will see the buzzards wait for the caracara to finish his fill.

That is neat. There's usually a pair we see from time to time in the river in Plum, just west of La Grange. I wonder if it was one of those travelling your way.

Fayette county is thick with them. We've always called them Mexican Eagles.
