Made it to the land of enchantment yesterday. Met a nice lady on the flight yesterday but I'm here for a different cougar.

Flew into phoenix, and after a couple stops we were headed to Prescott.

Got to the ranch about 1:30, and holy ***** We don't have country like this at home. Unloaded and visited for a few, then headed out to glass for a particular buck for my cousin ahead of the opener tomorrow.

Turned up a couple of deer, but not the one we were looking for.

Was not prepared for how tough it is to spot deer at a mile, but got the hang of it after a bit



Had steaks for dinner, visited for a bit and went to bed.

This morning we went back to the same place to glass. 24 degrees, no wind. Saw my first bull elk, a youngish 6x6 at about 800 yds. Didnt find the buck we were after.

Also saw some cowboys working cows. Was really cool to see them moving those cows around this rough country. Apparently when these guys drive cattle they still use a wagon and stay in teepees. Old school.


As we were driving back to the house, we saw a deadhead on the side of the road. We realized why we had been unable to find the buck…. He was dead. A cat had killed him and drug him under a juniper, and totes drug him out. Put a tape to him real quick, and he was ~199". Devastating, but life goes on.





Came back to the house, took a nap now s itting at the house trying to decide where we want to go… wind is blowing its ass off

I may get th hunt a cat but mostly here for moral support and comedic relief

Will be hunting a management buck next year having a blast getting my feet wet

Probably a flight attendant thought you were a child flying alone. Did you keep the plastic wings?

Yeah, they even have an Enchanted Circle scenic drive. That was interesting driving after the massive snowstorm they had last month.

I haven't met a single one good enough to get another license for another tag.

Last one expired 5-31-13.I had another in the feed pen for about a year, but her and her kids got to be too much.

Still looking, just not many of the kind I want out there any more.

First day of the actual hunt. Cold this morning, like 21.

Saw a few good bucks, but apparently nothing we were after (I would have shot them all). Did manage to find a shed glassing. Amazed that these guys are able to find this stuff



Got back to camp and learned first blood had been drawn. A guy's 14 yr old daughter smoked a deer at 40 yds. Kid is a killer.



This afternoon I went with a different guide to the top of a hill to glass. The hike was only like 3/10 of a mile but it was pretty steep. I was smoked when we got to the top haha. Saw some deer, but they were way too far for my 12x… prob 2 miles. Could see a ton of deer though; man this country is incredible

I went to NM last year and was amazed at things my guide was seeing. It's a skill for sure

I'll flew into PHX yesterday then went to Prescott. My 2nd time here. Beautiful country. Driving home with my college freshman son today. I've been looking but haven't seen any elk or deer yet. I'm gonna have to hunt out here sometime

Go to Bosa's Donuts in Payson. And the donuts are great there too.

I'm driving back with him in January. I'll check it out

Where does your son go to school and where do y'all drive to and from? Yeah Payson isn't really on the main path but that area up on the Mogollon Rim is really cool in more ways than one. It's an hour and a little more from me and a good summer getaway. The whole White Mountain area is a great outdoors getaway.
