I'm traveling with a crew from Ohio for a conference in Austin this week and one of my buddies asked for a good place to get a cowboy hat. We're in downtown Austin, but can drive for a good store. Appreciate any recommendations.

Thanks!

Texas Boot Company in Bastrop is pretty solid. Crap ton of clothes and boots too. Easy drive.

I want to hand them a calf rope & say, "swing that rope for me there cowboy." A nylon rope would be fine too, especially a nice stiff heeling rope.

Cavendars will probably do for some Ohio guys, but if they want long term/quality, Nathans in Georgetown.

Does that mean you assume everyone wearing a ball cap can hit a fastball 400'?

To the OP - Callahans on the SE side of town is a good option for mostly authentic. Cavenders or Allens Boots in town if you want an easier option.

He just said spin the rope, not heel a steer off the back of a horse.

And yeah... if you're wearing a ball cap, you should at least be able to take a competent hack at a fastball.

Great options. Texags does know stuff. If he ends up getting a hat I'll be sure to follow up with pics.

Them spinning a rope would be fun to watch. Especially the hide coming off their fingers. And don't talk about stiffys to their face.

Allen or Cavenders would be the easiest if you will be in Austin proper

Nope, not what that means at all, but you probably already knew that. Have a good one.

What kind of hat are we talking here? A $40.00 Mexican straw, a wool felt, a beaver stetson or a custom felt? Can't make a recommendation until we know the specifications.

+1 for Texas Hatters in Lockhart. No sense in buying anything less than full beaver. His prices are reasonable for a beaver hat.

Or WalMart, if it's just something to gather dust.

Looks like he's going to try and get an appt with Nate's in Georgetown. We'll see if he gets one.

did anybody else see Chris Del Conte down on the field? I know they kicked our ass but what a dewsh. Jeans, boots, sport coat, tie, cowboy hat. Looked like wife and daughters were with him and wearing over the top western fur trimmed outfits.

Lots of things frustrate me about t.u. but their recent thing of trying to be all things "Texas" , wearing cowboy hats etc, is just nauseating. Austin and tu are no more "texan" than San Francisco.

I have a Jimmy Pierce custom. It's a truly incredible experience. Jimmy is in Hutto. Be prepared to drink a lot and choose a hat.

This.

I went to the Austin Rodeo several times this past season as well as the Two Step festival in Georgetown. I lost count of how many backwards cowboy hats that I saw.

That hat is going to be a little more expensive than a palm leaf hat, but will last longer than most of us.

He's a talented guy. I visited with him at his booth at Rodeo Austin. Old school technique. Cool to see.

Lifelong Texan here. Come from a family of farmers. Been off the beaten path in Texas and many other places hundreds (maybe thousands) of times. Could grow crops and/or ranch if I absolutely had to. But even I can't pull off the cowboy hat look. Ohio-ons (or whatever) are, for the most part, WELL south of me.

For what its worth (which is absolutely nothing).

If someone wants a hat, get a hat.

I feel you. Same here, worked more cattle than I can count, feed, hunt, but I just can't pull it off either. However, kids got me a Stetson Bozeman for xmas last year, really like it even though I still don't look western. But figured what the heck, what do I care what people think, plus need something to keep the sun off my ears. Gotta keep the little crusties at bay.

So he didn't get an appointment with Nate's so he got one with Jimmy yesterday. Throughly enjoyed his experience. Thanks again for the recs. I'll try to get a pic when the hat gets in in late Dec.
