I rarely target shoot anymore and miss it. I have the space on my place, but only just enough. I have a horse and a couple of dogs that are quite bothered by noise resembling gunfire, so that really limits my opportunities as I don't like to needlessly torment my animals.

My initial reading, Uncle Sam seems to make it a giant pain in the ass, because we've all seen way too many bad movies apparently. In Europe, they all but require suppression but here, they act like it makes everyone into some sort of movie hit man.

Idiotic politics aside, I've got a reputation as a budget hawk and I have only limited patience for tedious paperwork. I do own a stock 10/22 as well as a mark II 22/45 with 5" bull barrel, so I have the basics perhaps to build something, but after a bit of browsing around the net, it almost seems like it might be cheaper/easier overall to buy something purpose built.

I do also have an older CMMG M4 5.56 as a possible platform to modify, but I would rather stick with something quieter and cheaper to shoot more regularly just for practice, so .22 is probably what I want to stick with, and that's a lot to swap out build wise.

Anyone with some experience with this have some good advice?

Bolt gun in a 16" or longer barrel is going to be the quieter option over anything.

Don't know your budget, but I've been happy with my Mark IV (Silencer Shop Edition with the short barrel) and a Rugged Oculus. I added a Volquartsen trigger, and it's a dream to shoot.

Pretty damn quiet, and all ammo is subsonic out of the barrel.

Silener Shop - can't remember what it is called but it is a trust that is a single gun trust. Those things have been getting approved in record time of late. Single Shot Trust maybe?

Pretty much pick any .22 suppressor you want, most are pretty similar in that they are small, lightweght (aluminum) and are monobaffle. Simple systems.

Shoot subsonic .22 ammo and you won't hear much, even in a semi. I shoot out of my 10.22 and the noise of the action is louder than anything, except maybe the impact of the projectile. A bolt gun will be quieter simply because you don't have the action.

Couple of hundred for the can, $200 extortion fee to the ATF nazis and however long the wait ends up being.

Form 1 is an option as well if you like tinkering, but the Form 4's have been getting approved fast of late and outside of the fun of building something, easier route with a .22.

If either of your Rugers are threaded, then just use them. If you want to go all-in, get the Volquartsen Mini Mamba or Mini LLV upper. Next would be a bolt rifle; this is another rabbit hole that can go from $250 to thousands, I would get a Ruger so you can use 10/22 magazines

I won a Ruger Precision Rimfire rifle in a raffle and have since added an Energetic NYX Mod2 suppressor. I can sit on my back porch and plink squirrels or field rats on my 1 acre lot with my pups and the neighbors pups right there and not bother them a bit. I also use it on my stock 10/22 takedown, mark IV 22/45, and .22 charger. Yes I like Ruger .22s. All but the 22/45 share magazines as well so that helps keep cost in check. I also use standard or high velocity rounds in the semi-auto as they cycle them better, and sub-sonics in the precision rifle.

Great recommendation!

If you want a full-sized bolt rifle, consider a Bergara BMR Carbon. Light in weight, excellent build quality, and of course comes with a threaded barrel. Ruger also makes the American Rimfire, but my Bergara consistently outshoots my shootin' buddy's American with every type of .22 ammo we have.

If you want a semi-auto rifle, then the obvious choice is a Ruger 10/22. Either buy a nicer one, or buy a base model and modify it to your liking. However -- before you get a 10/22 rifle, I would suggest you look at the Charger pistol which is essentially a chopped 10/22 rifle w/a threaded barrel. Add a folding pistol brace, and it will do anything a rifle will do but in a shorter and much more handy package. Bonus points if you add a binary trigger. If you want an AR type of rifle, look at the S&W. Or if you happen to have an AR lower with a pistol brace, you can get an AR pistol upper from PSA and add a .22lr conversion kit.

For a pistol, the easiest way to go is again with a Ruger MK IV. I like the Lite pistols, since some of the heavy barrel versions really get unbalanced when you add a can. Another way to go is an S&W SW22 Victory, to which you add a Tandemkross Comet barrel. This threaded barrel is extremely short, which keeps the overall length quite manageable when you add on your suppressor. It also had the advantage of not letting high-velocity rounds go super-sonic because there isn't enough barrel to let them gain that much velocity.

There's also a bunch of polymer .22lrs out there as well. Some of them require you to add a threaded adapter to the end of the barrel. I prefer the Rugers and the Victory over these, but the polymer ones do have the advantage of higher magazine capacity. Sig, Taurus, Glock, S&W, FN, Ruger, and Walther all make these.

I have this same setup and love it. Still haven't gotten a threaded rifle.

I have a 10/22. Bought a .22 supressor a couple years ago. My 10/22 didn't have a threaded barrel. Checked into getting it thrended and found out it was going to be about $120. Found out volquartsen bull barrels for a 10/22 that are already threaded start at about $175. At this point I decide to get a new barrel. Barrel comes in and I install it on the action then try and put the stock back on and it doesn't fit. The barrel is way to big for the stock. Oh ****, I bought a bull barrel to replace a normal 10/22 barrel. Dumbass. At this point I can try and return the barrel or get a new stock. Well, then I buy a magpul stock. Got a pretty nice 10/22 now.
