Chili, soup, and stew season starts Jan 1 and ends Dec 31 in my house. Drives The Wife nuts when I'm eating chicken and dumplings in July.

Was 44 degrees on the ranch this morning in Oatmeal TX. At least that's what the PEC temperature gage said when I got up to go feed the show cattle. I think Wednesday night will be around 37 degrees. I'll be in the deer blind.

Old German settlement starting back in the 1840's. My great Grandfather came from Munich Germany 1905 and bought the ranch that been in my family since that day. Just a little over 1,000 acres. The headwaters of the South Fork of the San Gabriel River runs right through the middle of the ranch. Oatmeal is also where Pinky Wilson is from. Pinky wrote the Aggie War Hymn.

Did you know Jim and Judy Carlile? I think they were from Bertram, then moved to SA then back to Burnet. Jim passed away a couple of years back. Good guitar picker

Judy was the daughter of Floyd Ferguson a pretty well known old time Texas fiddler. He sat her down at a piano when she was a youngster and made her learn how to back old fiddle tunes up. I play a pretty decent fiddle myself and we used to get together on a regular basis and have jam sessions. Fun times. They were/are good people

Always thought Pinky was from Andice. Used to work with a lady who knew him when she lived in Florence. BTW you can still get a decent burger at the Andice General Store.

I made chili last night! This batch is for skiing this weekend.

My go-to (in the Instant Pot): https://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/beef-and-dark-beer-chili-237096 + Jiffy Cornbread on the side!

But we've been in chili season for two months now. This batch is for skiing this weekend:

I made a big batch last week. 5 lbs venison/ beef burger, 3 lbs leftover brisket. No beans, rice, shredded newspaper or any other fillers. I did eat it scooped over Fritos though.

Ha. My granddad cooked a couple bags of that one night for dinner at deer camp. We had like 10 of us in a 3 room shack. If someone had lit a match we would have exploded.

It's called 15 bean soup but they actually put exactly 239 beans in each bag.

I am a big fan of split pea soup. Never had a French Canadian version as my mom's side is Irish and that's where my recipe comes from. I do have a ham bone and two bags of splits ready.

The canned brand is Habitant but it is outrageous $ if you buy it online. I used to buy it from a website called Hometown Favorites but they don't carry it anymore. It is hard to find south of Connecticut.

I buy the yellow split peas at the Puerto Rican market because HEB only carries green.
