Defrosted the deep freeze and found 5 year old red fish fillets. They're frozen solid in water but based upon the age what does the OB say about tossing or keeping? Ignore the fact that if we haven't eaten them in 5 years and we may never eat….would they still be good if I do finally thaw and eat?

Yep. If frozen in water properly or properly vacuum sealed I would eat em.

I recommend to my customers not to freeze fish. Just keep what you can eat in the next ten days. Just keep em refrigerated for up to ten days. Fishing is too fun....rinse repeat. Eat em fresh. It's worth it.

A lot of old fish gets thrown out wastefully. Change that cycle.....

Since you froze in water, I would have no problem eating them.

If it was me, I would cook them in something where they are not the main event. Throw them in a gumbo or some other dish with plenty of flavor. Maybe coat them in heavy sauce. I would not just sprinkle with some blackened seasoning and call it good.

If my wife were involved in any of this, I would probably just toss them.

Yeah my wife and yours sounds like they'd be on the same page on this one.

I'll keep and now that I know they're in there eat em!

Well if they turn out to be bad. Go set some trot lines and use it for cut bait. Catch more fish.

I've eaten at least 3 year old crappie frozen in solid ice. No issues. Tasted great. Which is why I freeze them in solid ice.

I know this is sarcastic but absolutely do not use any part of game fish for bait. Very illegal....

Yes sir. I was trying to make a funny. Poor taste I guess.
Can't tell you how many Carp I used for cut bait for trot lines on the river I grew up on. We were poor as church mice and would use anything for bait.
My dad just would not hear of eating carp or gar.

We had some redfish tonight that was vacuumed packed for the last two years. I noticed that it had lost the seal this weekend so I thawed it in the fridge. I cut off the burned parts and put the fillets on the grill. Came out great!

Pls don't misunderstand. I was absolutely NOT calling you out. I know you already know better. But some don't and do make that mistake. Just didn't want anyone reading to think that would work. I know you were funnin.

No worries. I understood sir.
And you are so right. So I went Crappie fishing a long time ago on Medina lake with our neighbors kid.
He had his minnow bucket and said he had seined minnows for us to use.
He used the dip net and brought out a small 2" black bass. I told him it was illegal… he said he had no idea.
