Cool buck. I'd say 4. Could be a bruiser in 2-3 years.

Put a bullet in and the bolt won't close. Ammo is from Dallas reloads. I checked zero with the ammo a few weeks before deer season. Had another gun at the house. Tried a different bolt and it closed. Then I went back to the bolt that wouldn't close. Tried the ammo in a different magazine and it worked.

That's really weird.

I did clean the bolt when I got back to the house. It had a little bit of gun powder on it. Wonder if that could have been the issue

3 was my guess as well. Bastrop county. Might get 1 deer like this on camera each year. Would like to let him grow up but not sure the neighbors will let him. Every year I see a deer or 2 that will be really good in a year or 2 and end up passing on them only to not see them again.

Could have been. I had a couple speck of sand lock up a trigger once.

Definitely 3.5 on the deer. Nothing wrong with shooting him if you want. I've passed on bigger and shot smaller.

Ha. I'm next door in Fayette Co.

I get the frustration. Some places have more older deer than others.

I wouldn't worry about anyone's hot takes on here. They don't know your situation, what the population around you is like, how often you get to hunt, how much you need the meat, etc.

I would never judge anyone shooting something that's legal. Whether or not it's a good idea is up to you.

Not mature. That's all that matters. Once you get into 4.5+ you can have all types of arguments for each year but he's not there yet

He might be four. I run about 20 cameras a year. After watching the same deer for a number of years, 10s of thousands of pics, I can tell you, not all deer have the same body shape. I can show you deer that look exactly like your picture for three seasons in a row and they never change. Never develop the pitbull neck. Some get round and fat with time. Some stay lighter and just develop a deeper chest. Some get round and fat but never get the neck. And some get the neck but stay lean in the body. They vary a lot more from animal to animal than most people realize. Mix in time of year and differences in locations and it can be hard unless you have known history with a deer.

To your point

I watched a spike and a three point walking together this morning and the spike was half the size of the three point. The three point was the same size as the yearling six that was up ahead of it. That spike will never look anything like the other two. 0% chance.

3.5 he's still young. I'd let him walk. Will be a very nice buck in a couple years.

Is it a Remington 700 by chance? If so take it to gunsmith to have new, better and safe trigger installed. That shouldn't happen with any rifle. I had a Remington 700 that had some of the same things happen while hunting.

Tikka. It wasn't the trigger. Couldn't close the bolt. Shot it later this morning and it was fine. Must have just been the little bit of gun power on the bolt face.

I'm in the 3yo camp. Will be a bruiser in a year or two. But, this is American (at least it will be in January..) so shoot him if you want to
