How long do you want to ignore this user?
Stopped by Academy in Abilene for my monthly purchase of 9MM. Cashier asked for my ID. I asked her If she was kidding cause I was old enough to be a grandpa. She said company policy. I asked for the manager and he also said company policy to ask for an id. They never explained what the company policy was other than they card everybody. I've shopped at Academy for the last 40 years and now they start carding everybody when buying ammo?

I don't wanna hear from TA I should've showed my id and gone on my way. I smell BS and why are they enforcing this company policy 5 days before the election?

Anybody here get carded while shopping at Academy?

That's funny! I stopped by the same Academy in Abilene today around 12:45am to get targets and ammo for some last minute zeroing and didn't get carded…did you have on your MAGA hat?

Edit to add that I purchased rifle and pistol ammo.

Hands down worst academy I've ever been in - especially before Christmas last year. Something has improved somewhat but incredibly frustrating doing business there. Someone could make a mint putting well run competitive store in Abilene. That being said, don't remember ever being carded there. Alon at 277 and 707 did card me for snuff. Showed him my id and he said he had to scan it. I said why and was told to verify age. I said you can do math can't you? I'm pushing 60 and this guy would not sell me snuff without scanning my dl. I told him I have zero interest in them getting all information my dl might have on it and the idea of them tracking my purchases didn't appeal to me either. I was a lil chapped and snuff poor when I left.

I think I've heard of idiotic store policies refusing to sell pistol ammo to people over 21.

I bought a pistol at sportsman's Warehouse a few years back, they wrapped the box in cellophane before handing it to me. I immediately cut it off with my pocket knife and told them if I was looking to cause problems, the gun in my holster probably would've sufficed.

Son was denied a box of .410 at an Academy because it could be used in a handgun, when he was 18.

I've reached the point where I basically refuse shopping in big box stores unless absolutely necessary.

I can walk into our local feed store and buy what I need (hunting related) and maybe spend 3-5% more. But they know my name and my both of my sons (14 an 16 year old) and usually have what I need without driving over an hour to "town". Plus they support virtually every program at the school my sons attend.

Academy and the like have their place, I just don't normally initially think about them.

Allow me to contribute to the Academy *****ing with my story.

I got a nice fishing rod for Christmas, but it was a medium and I wanted a med light. I didn't have a gift receipt, but it still had the tags and it was only a week or so after Christmas. Told the guy I wanted an exchange for the same item, just med light. Guy says to go get the one I want and bring it up, so I do.

Guy scans the tag on the return rod and it only says $25 on a $150 rod, but the med light says $150. Dude says I owe them $125 to exchange. Wtf? Guy gets manager. Manager says they only give credit for the lowest price in the last 60 days or so without a receipt. Told him no chance this rod was ever for sale for $25 cause I would have bought them all.

Guy says sorry, nothing I can do. I said I was taking the med light and leaving the medium as an even exchange and that was what was going to happen. To his credit, he took the L and I left with the med light. It is a Waterloo Salinity btw. Great rod for an off the shelf option.

Outside of things like lumber, we try to avoid box stores all together. Order ammo online. Order tractor and truck parts online. Hell, we don't even go into HEB anymore. Just replace the order they bring it to the truck. I just can't justify going into a store very often. I'm about one more frustration away from being a hermit.

There's the law and then what the gatekeepers choose to enforce.

For example, the law is perfectly clear that if I have a check made out to me, I can endorse it to a third party who can then cash the check for themselves. This is basic law of negotiable instruments, but don't try telling that to a bank. They look at you with a dumb stare.

Or the other day I had a title company tell my client that they did not recognize gift deeds in the chain of title and demanded they get a new warranty deed to replace it.

What can you do? They are a private entity and can have their own standards.
Well…you sounded taller on radio.

I agree with this. I am not rich (particularly not TexAgs rich) but do have some money. And if I can shop at a local place, owned by local people, who hire local kids, who buy advertising for the booster clubs, who sponsor youth sports teams, who spend thousands or tens of thousands of dollars at youth livestock shows, whose owners and employees participate in fundraisers and community service projects, who donate four dump truck loads of sand to the softball and baseball fields any time it is needed, well I shop there. I don't care if I pay a little more.

Yes. And also old and crotchety.

I think it's just being experienced and old enough to know what I need and want without having to go "shopping". I have a low tolerance for BS.

Now, if you gotta go to the store like my sister and palpate the chips and eyeball the celery or dig through 150 turkeys and pick the milk thats 8 jugs back and harass a manager because its not cold enough, and generally turn a 15 minute task into a 3 hour ordeal, you have to do that in store. Some people enjoy that, I just don't. Even waiting in line 4 people deep at the supplier while 3 contractors try to fiddle around figuring out what the hell they need drives me up the wall.

Time to support your local gun shops in your area. Circle Star out in Roans Prairie is top notch! He put a new barrel on my gun and since I was a repeat customer he barely charged me anything. Great customer service and a great guy!

Just curious. Do you own your own business where you a accountable and liable for others actions? I get it. It's kind of stupid. But if you have a company policy that says say ID anyone under 40 then that leaves you open to liability. If that's the policy and one slips by then some lawyer ask you how you determine under 40, did your employee receive age ID training, etc. Yes I think lawyers cause us do things that seem unreasonable. But if the policy is ID everyone and the employee doesn't then it's on the employee when clearly the company policy is that they should ID everyone.. I don't think you should be mad at the company for doing this. It's the legal system/lawyers that cause this.

Take that weak sauce response to F16.

I used to work retail when I was in my teens. The people working at academy were just like me. I don't give a single crap what the policy is. I signed up to work and agreed to work for a set pay per hour and in exchange, I would follow the rules. I don't give a single solitary hoot if you don't like the policy. I'd refuse a sale if I had a customer that was a hard nose *******. I don't care if you buy from us or not, I get paid the same per hour either way. My only goal in life was to make enough money to pay for some stuff and part of continuing to do that is enforcing stupid policies. One of our stupid policies was "don't chase down thieves." If I saw a thief sticking a $1000 tool in his pants and walking out the door, my only job was telling security and when they acknowledged receipt of my message, I'm good to go. Steal it. I don't care. I get paid to follow the rule and that's the rule. One new employee tackled a dude in the parking lot for stealing $50 in nails. You know what he got for his effort? FIRED. That's what. If I didn't like the policy I could seek employment elsewhere or start my own company.

People that give retail folks a hard time because they are on some virtue signaling bullcrap witch hunt are tools.

Some of those folks working may not even have enough money to blow on ammo. Be happy you have the luxury. Just show your GD ID and stop being a d-bag Or buy it somewhere else.

Yes I do. And I find feedback vital. Most often, the best place to get it is from the front lines, closest to whoever I'm trying to separate from their $ (like the Academy checker and manager in the OP's case). I also don't hesitate to offer feedback as a consumer when I think it might be useful, and can do so without being a "tool".

And for what it's worth I'm not necessarily mad at anybody, just thoroughly disgusted at what seems to be an exponentially growing tolerance for "stupid", regardless of where it comes from. Rolling over and playing dead in such instances just isn't in my DNA, but each to his own.

Lawyers and liberals have ruined this country.

When I was 11, I could walk up to the gun section at Walmart, grab 2 boxes of Remington .22 Thunderbolts, hand the cashier $2.17 and walk out of the store.

Lawyers suck unless they're working for you.

Problem resolved. Called Corporate in Katy and explained the problem and how unnecessary the buying experience was. Was given the names of upper management at the Abilene store. She understood the BS of a much older man having to show an ID just to prove I'm older than 21 when anyone can go online and purchase ammo with only agreeing that buyer is 21+. What really got her attention was when I mentioned identity theft and how easy it is for retail employees to wreck your life. For you young GD know it all posters, think before you give anybody your DL when it's unnecessary. And for you posters that think I have no manners, it's sad you don't get to know me.
