Republic Boots in Houston is another option to look at as well.

Good enough for Ryan Bingham to have a pair made there anyway.
The owner Chris is an Aggie, IDIS '01.

Kimmel Company in Comanche. Eddie Kimmel has built up one of the most productive small shops in Texas. Specializes in: Old-style boots that are a little stouter and have a heavier inner sole, which means they last longer. Turnaround time is about 3 months

People think I'm an idiot or something, because all I do is cut lawns for a living.

I have a short, wide foot. (Friend told me to throw away the boots and wear the box). Not a lot of off the shelf choices for me. It's been a LOT of years but bought my first pair of customs from ML Leddy. The quality was good but always thought they fit a little too loose. Little's from SA was a commercial exhibitor back then at Houston Rodeo. Gave them a try and ended up buy two or three pairs through the years. I'd go with Little's if I were to order again, although it has been many years.

The search starts and ends here, IMO. Zephan is a GREAT guy. He learned the trade from a boot maker in Lampasas. He has made boots for famous politicians and celebrities. I killed a gator and he made awesome boots for me. aTm logo on the uppers, custom leather work, custom stitching, initials, Texas flag, etc...

He can supply the leather for you, or you can bring your own like I did with the gator. I had the hide tanned and dyed black at American Tanning & Leather, and brought to him for boots, belt and a wallet. It's pretty special knowing I killed the gator and now wear boots to remember that hunt with my son. He killed one and had boots made as well...

Pablo Jass is the bootmaker in Lampasas. Pablo apprenticed under Ray Jones. May dad, who passed away this summer, has a pair of Jones boots. I used to wear those around the house as a little kid. Could probably have fit both legs in one boot!
Thanks to OP for this thread and the memories it invoked!

I grew up in Lampasas County, and Ray Jones was a legendary boot maker. It seemed like everyone either had or wanted a pair of Jones boots. The craftsmanship, style, and look his boots had made them very desirable and distinctive looking. You could spot a pair a mile away. When Ray announced his retirement and stopped taking orders, it took him three years to get all of the boots made that he had on the books.

Pablo Jass worked for Ray, and took up where Ray left off.

I was just a junior high/high school aged kid when Ray retired, but I wanted a pair of his boots so bad. When I got out on my own and could afford it, I had Pablo Jass make me a pair of boots like I'd always wanted. I still have them and wear them to church and for special occasions. Those boots are nearly 20 years old and they still look like they did the day I picked them up.

I've had Beck's make me a couple of pair, and Al Dos Santos at James Leddy's make me several pair. As mentioned earlier, I just picked up a new pair at James Leddy's yesterday. However, I'll always treasure my boots from Pablo Jass, who learned the trade under the master, Ray Jones.

Maida's Boots and Shoes in Houston

Good people who do some incredible work. Not the best option if you're on a budget but if that's not an issue I highly recommend.

I know these guys personally and they will do whatever it takes to make the customer happy.
I have had great experiences with Republic Boots. I have a custom pair with hippo lower and calfskin upper with some custom detailing that ran $3,700 or so, but I also have three off-the-shelf pair from Republic that fit like gloves.

Crazy the prices now for custom boots. Back in late 70's I got custom 16" tops, zero decorative stitching and made from Muleskin for $150 at Brisuelas in Laredo. Then the old man retired and son started bringing them in from across and quality dived.

Many compliments on my Beck rough out hide boots . My Beck boots are heavier and more durable than anything I've ever worn. Very comfortable as they are custom made.

I don't want to spend what a pair of custom boots costs, but my birthday is coming up and I've been thinking about stopping by and seeing if a pair of their in stock Bowies tickle my fancy in person as they do online. My daily wear boots to the office are a pair of Ariats that are the most comfortable boots I've ever had (not sure how a custom pair could feel any better), but they're not resoleable and probably have a year left.

Will you be at the toolbox?

I'll have to do it on the weekends as we're going usually 6-7 days a week with the kids and their activities, so driving into town isn't on the radar during the week. It's insane. I think we have the weekend before Thanksgiving free, so that may be when I try to head down there.

You can get custom Becks starting at $700. Of course, you can go up from there if you get exotics but my calf hide fully custom pair made in 2008 are still serving me well. They were $850 back then because I added some options. But well worth the money.

I also want to say, because it's been mentioned a couple times- I don't care at all which famous people a boot maker has made boots for. I trust any one of you degenerates more than their so called endorsement
I had lunch today at the Boot Co. in Raymondville. It's a boot themed restaurant in the old Rios Boots building and much of the decor is left over from Rios' - including many pictures of famous people with boots or Abraham Rios w/ customers/boots. This picture caught my eye and reminded me or this post; it being election time and all I took a snapshot of it to share here.

I thought I recognized the architecture pretty easily. There aren't too many places around that resemble the background that a President would visit. The old cavalry stables at Fort Brown, now Texas Southmost College in Brownsville, is one of the few. This being Texags and all, I wasn't about to get caught talking out of my a** so I asked the internet if Reagan had been to TSC back in the day and this was the first hit. I know this doesn't add a lot to the thread, I just thought it was cool (and not for the purpose of endorsement /winkie).

Another vote for Republic. They did my gator this year and I love them. They were just under $2k and you get a 10% discount if you pay up front.

Just picked these up from Parker Boots today! I had asked for a simple outline of a Brittany spaniel with dominos on the pulls. I lost my favorite dog in 2020. I was a bit emotional when getting sized so they went the extra mile. I consider these "pieces of art" now.

I've worked with 4 different bootmakers so far, Parker is way above anyone else.
