Is it possible to hop on one of the scenic trains, get off, spend the night with an outfitter, fish a day or so, then get back on a train and continue on?

Could I look this up? Maybe. It's always nice to hear from someone who has really done it.

Sure. If you wanted to do that, I suggest taking the train to Seward. You could stay at the Seward Military Resort if you or someone in your group is military. They have fish processing/freezers, and shipping for your catch. It's also fairly cheap compared to other places in Seward.

Edit to add that this is the southern direction from Anchorage, the train also goes far north

Thank you. I've been e-mailing back and forth with a train company, and they seemed to think it's no big deal with lots of places to potentially stop, overnight, fish, and get back on. Evidently, this can be as nice a train ride as you want combined with the fishing. Talkeetna and Denali Are potential stop, overnight, and fish places on the way to Fairbanks from Anchorage.

Very easy to do. I'm looking to do the same after an Alaskan cruise next year. Anchorage to Talkeetna, spend one or two nights flightseeing and exploring, and then Talkeetna to Fairbanks. You just have to buy separate tickets for each train segment. Can be done easily on the Alaska RR website. I've been on Alaska RR before. I recommend the Gold Star service for the seating, views, and food/beverage. For outfitters/guides, you may want to contact Talkeetna Gear Shop. They will know.

Excellent. We will likely do first class of some sort.

Last time I was in Alaska I went on a short hike just outside of anchorage. 100 yards in, there was a massive bear turd that was literally still steaming. Did a 180 and did an olympic fast walk back to the car.
