My mom had VERY large pecan tree fall in the last storm. Unfortunately, the quotes to remove were outrageous. Any ideas for a cost effective removal?

Sure. Get a chainsaw and get to work.

Very few people actually know how to do that. And they think those that do are simpletons. WORK that is.

Noted. I was hoping a BBQ company or some young kids looking to make a few $ might want the wood. Wishful thinking.

Removing large trees is dangerous. Pay the money.

If the tree is already on the ground, it is hard work, but not complicated. If you are willing to work your tail off, have the means to haul it off or stack it up, and want to save lots of money- get a chainsaw and get to work as suggested above. If that doesn't sound like he solution you wanted, hire a pro, as suggested above. If you hire some cheapo off of FB marketplace or the HD parking lot, don't be surprised when you get exactly what you paid for. A 3/4 done job, torn up yard, and mess left after that you still have to clean up.

Give this guy a call. He sells firewood and I think will come remove it for free or small fee.

If you do the work yourself but do not have means of hauling or storage, leaving out by the road work well as some are always looking for free wood, specially pecan. Many churches also have a groups of retired persons looking to help out in these situations.

If you are gonna burn it. Call the non-emergency dispatch first and they will let you know if it's safe to burn (wind speed, burn ban status etc) and never use gasoline as a starter. Diesel or starter fluid

More info would help. Is it completely on the ground and not leaning against another tree or structure, how close is it to power lines, what's around it (road, driveway, house, power lines, other trees), how far to haul pieces to a main road? All these determine DIY vs pro and cost. Also, hiring some toothless guy with a cheap price is like bargain shopping on your surgeon. You'll be sorry.

A sawzall will get a lot of the work done if you don't own a chainsaw. Get you a sixer of talls and get to work. Personally, I'd wait until the next cold front to get after it.

This.

That said, depending on some of this info, I know two guys in that general area (Brazos and Madison County) with saw mills that may be interested in taking it off your hands.

I'm in Brenham and can help. I have the saws and trailer. I tried to cut my leg off below the knee cap while cutting up a limb today. A few hours in the ER and I'm good to go.

hell I have cut up so many trees on the ranch over the years, anyone can do it. Get the chain saw and a couple new sharp blades and a buddy or your son or friend and get to work, 2-3 hours tops and that tree can be loaded up in the back of a trailer. cut off all the branches first and leave the big stuff for last, if your blades get dull at least most of the leafy stuff that takes up space and looks bad will be gone. come back and cut up the big stuff when you have time. drink some ice-cold beer that you put in the ice chest packed with ice at 9am that morning

just another day on the farm
