During warm months there is enough larvae. They'll also eat algae and the pond weeds I have growing in there
I do throw some pellets occasionally 1-2xper week

None of the critters have tried to dip out the fish? We've put goldfish in livestock troughs before and it usually takes just a few days for the racoons to get them.

I put a big chuck of flagstone in the bucket. Keeps the water cooler with shade & gives the fish a place to hide under. Also gives the birds something to perch on and a nice place for the coons to wash hands.

Herons/Egrets are murder on goldfish
