Our hens are ~5-6 months old and just started laying eggs. Some of the eggs have a bunch of white specs as shown in attached picture. I've read different things that it could be (e.g. calcium deficiency, lack of water, etc.).

Anyone had this issue with their hens before? Our breeds are listed below:

1. Rhode Island Red
2. Easter Egger (pictures egg is def. Not one of theirs)
3. Black Australorp
4. Barred Plymouth Rock (I'm thinking the pictures egg may be one of theirs)

More concerned if a feed adjustment is needed to ensure they are as healthy as can be. Currently on layer feed with access to plenty of water. Any advice or wisdom is appreciated.

There are so many variations that happen. I don't even notice or try to keep track. We collect, we eat/sell.

Their ear tufts should indicate the egg color. That may help id the chicken.

Thanks so much BBQ, you're the man. Really appreciate the info you sent. Also, since your screen name (or whatever it's called) is BBQ, what's your top recommended BBQ in the state?

Look forward to hearing back and thanks again for your help!

Not a "state wide expert" by no means but i do have my handful of favorites scattered throughout central and southeast Tx.

I like Blacks, Stiles Switch, Truth, Coopers " the original in Llano" , Blood Brothers, Louie Muellers ( full transparency, i am of the opinion it has slipped over the years and I hate to say it simply because the owner is a childhood friend.

Franklin's but i refuse to stand in any line for BBQ.
Pinkerton's, Snow's, Lulings "in Houston "

I hope that helps

I think the key thing is that your hens are laying eggs; therefore, it isn't likely that you have a feeding defeciency or lack of water. Sometime people forget that when hens lay eggs they are reproducing, they aren't laying eggs so we can have our chorizo and egg taco or our egg McMuffin, I know that may sound funny but sometimes people get so detached they don't remember that a hen laying an egg is reproducing. It is an innate behavior for them to stop laying in stressful situations such as a severly deficient diet or prolonged lack of water. Given that your hens are laying fine, I am sure you don't have an issue there. The pigment that makes egg shells brown is ooporhyrin or some more modern studies list it as protoporphyrin IX. The pigmentation on egg shells can be influenced by a number of parameters such as housing system (cage-free, pasture raised, traditional caged system, etc), age of the hen, breed, diet, stressors and diseases such as infectious bronchitis. In your case Black Australorps and Barred Plymouth Rocks are both light brown egg layers (I suspect the egg in the picture came from one of these) whereas Rhode Island Reds usually lay slightly to much darker brown eggs. I don't think you have anything to worry about, I am certain you are feeding a commercially availalbe layer feed, so it is more than adequately balanced and exactly what they need. Enjoy the hens!! The days will soon get shorter and I am sure you are aware that length of photoperiod affects laying, so you may need to "extend the day" a bit with lights. For what it is worth, I have seen a ton of eggs that look just like the one in your picture.

I read the Outdoor board every few days and I always enjoy it but I don't post very often. I studied Animal Science and Poultry Science (those two departments did not like each other when I was there, long ago, haha) so your question caught my attention. Because of my job I go onto commercial poultry operations often so I cannot have birds at home for biosecurity reasons, so I always enjoy the backyard poultry questions on the outdoor board. I think there are other poultry scientists on the board if memory serves. Gig'em

Do you happen to know Dr. David Caldwell?

Absolutely! I haven't seen David in years but I know him well. In fact, David, Dr. Audrey McElroy (current Texas A&M Department Head), Dr. Morgan Farnell (current Associate Dept Head and Extension Program Leader) and I all went to graduate school together. The last time I saw David was at the IPPE (big poultry meeting/convention) Meeting in Atlanta, GA years ago.

How is the integrity of the eggshell? Is it strong or do they break easy?

I'm not a poultry "expert" but on the feed (we manufacture livestock feed) if the eggshells are brittle, you might try a higher protein layer ration and also put out some oyster shell. The color to me is likely just what that bird puts out as egg color in different breeds and different diets can vary significantly. Some poultry science (or vet) person can hopefully chime in if there is something wrong with the bird(s).

Thanks for the info, good to know in general! Eggshells are not brittle, normal aside from spots. We've come to the conclusion it's breed related.

No, I did/do not.

And believe it or not, since I typed that this afternoon I discovered I'm many hens poorer than I was this morning. I got home tonight to find a bloodbath. Looks like I had a dog or two (judging by the 2 big piles of steaming dog sh*t) stop by. I had a headcount of 28; so far I've found 9 live and 9 carcasses, so ten are unaccounted for. Odds are tomorrow when the sun comes up I'll find a few stragglers roaming around that I couldn't find, of course I'll find more dead ones too.

Part of raising chickens. I'm disappointed because I try hard to protect them - but this is life in the country- fraught with perils, just like SSS.

Not to derail the thread... but since we are talking chickens -

I looked around this morning and sure enough, I found a few stragglers/walking wounded. I'm pretty sure I was had 28 and I now have 11 in the coop, and 2 walking around outside I know of. I disposed of 10 dead hens, so that leaved 5 unaccounted for. I'm wagering that of those there is one, maybe two, alive and in hiding. Chicken math.

These girls are 100% totally traumatized, hardly moving a muscle from where they found safety; no clucking, no crowing (rooster made it), no pecking around... just paralysis. I have put the outer chicken run door in manual mode; there is more than enough space (by design) to live in their confinement for a while. I told MrsCP, rather than invest in any energy in replacements, to get back to some random number of chickens I thought I needed, I intend to spend the near future spoiling these girls all I can.

I am frustrated with myself because I saw a pack of dogs down the road (likely trailing a female in heat) the day before and I didn't think 'hey, there's a bunch of strange dogs around, might want to keep the chickens cooped up a day or three'. Now I know and will modify MY behavior.

This is always a risk; I just hate these mass casualty deals. In fact, the last one is exactly the thing that inspired me to expand my coop... and we all saw how that turned out. lol.

When you restock, I thought I'd pass along a couple of breeds that we've had great luck with: Whiting True Blue and Whiting True Green. They've been healthy, mite-free for the most part, and good layers. The best part is that the egg shells and crack without shattering.

Chicken math is a thing for sure. We try to average 10 birds. When I get down to between 6 to 8 birds, I order enough to take me back up to 12 to 14. My chickens are averaging somewhere between 6 to 12 months before nature takes them out. Coyotes, foxes, racoons, hawks and I think a neighbors dog make sure I have fresh young hens all the time. Frustrating when you get them old enough to finally lay eggs and something takes out 2 to 5 of them in a single day.

I've got a 3 year old hen who is too tough to die and an older rooster that must push the hens towards the danger to save himself, because he has outlived 2 or 3 rounds of chick purchases.

Chicken math doesn't work out financially. We spend way more on them than we ever save by not buying store eggs, but it's a fun hobby and something for me to have my kids do instead of technology.

Here Here! I am probably closer to a 'right sized' flock now for us. I am/was literally buying feed and spending $ to package/deliver free eggs to friends and extended family.
