I've owned an Sig P365 for a few years, love it. FIL added a compensator to his, (couldn't say which brand/model), and I felt a noticeable difference in the shot spread at 10yds.

My question for those more knowledgeable than I: what was your process for choosing attachments to your EDC/primary home defense firearms? What would you buy again, and what would you stay away from?


My second topic involves a Rossi 44 special revolver that I inherited from a late family member. It has a 2.5" snub nose barrel on it, and I'd like to have one a bit longer so that it's less of a hand cannon. Similar to the above, how would I go about this? Is it more of a question for a gunsmith?

I'm not sure a Rossi is worth the expense of a new barrel unless it has a lot of sentimental value.

Any aftermarket grips available for the revolver?

A large hogue grip etc would do more than the longer barrel.

A gas pedal makes a big difference.

I've never put one on my carry guns but it would be a good idea on a night stand gun.

Comps need a lot of gas to work. (10MM, 9 major, 38 Super Major etc)

Radian recently released their Ramjet compensator for the P365. Real world feel I would agree with the 44% reduction is felt recoil. It completely changes the feel of the gun.

Lot of sentimental value, but didn't think about putting a new grip on it. Pretty sure the old one just has a single screw keeping it on, I'll look into that.

Have ramjets on two glocks. Big fan but weaker shooters (my pre teen son) are more susceptible to limp wristing even using the radian springs.

Which P365 model do you have. TaylorFreelance has a nice backstrap for the P365Xmacro. I have one, and it helps with grip and lower weight.

Personally I wouldn't put a comp on a carry gun. They make the guns shoot better, faster and group better by the recoil mitigation. The downside is the crazy loudening effect, especially in an enclosed space.

Real world stats on a shooting is 3 shots in 3 seconds at 3 yards.

A light should be a must and three reasons.

1. So you can ID your target
2. So you can disorient your target.
3. So you can manage recoil better.

For a home defense gun: a light. Positive ID in low light situations is absolutely critical. Whether that involves learning to shoot a pistol with one hand so you can use an offhand light or just mounting a light to the gun, a light absolutely should be on the list of mods for home defense.

Outside of that I would ask two questions before making a change to an EDC gun.

1) will it affect reliability?
2) does this provide a significant capability increase to my ability to use this firearm?

On the subject of compensators, I have personally found they absolutely can affect reliability. I have a "Roland Special" Glock 19 with an RMR, light, and a KKM barrel and 2 port compensator. I trust that gun to be reliable *if using the correct ammo*. I can't shoot reman 115gr or WWB and expect it to run. But if you feed it hotter ammo (any defensive 124gr load I've tried works, as well as 124gr Federal AE for practice ammo), its a very reliable pistol.

I would shoot the heck out of a comp'd gun with both your carry ammo and tons of range ammo before I trusted it to be as reliable as a stock configuration and chose to carry it.

For the same reason, I haven't gotten into using the Shield 15 round mag upgrade for my G43x/G48. I just don't have the time to really wring those mags out enough to trust them right now, so I stick with the stock 10 round Glock magazines that I know work.

So if you do make any changes to a EDC gun, make sure its something that will actually provide benefit, and something you have time and ammo to test the hell out of on the range before you trust it. In general, I think most people would benefit far more from taking a pistol class for the same money than they would upgrading to a comp'd barrel. Just my .02

Well, about those. This is one of my bugaboos (like I don't have way too many already), because its really, really hard to track down an actual source for those numbers.

Here's a great article from Lucky Gunner on the whole "rule of 3s" thing and the problems with applying police use of force statistics to civilian EDC.

My general answer is two fold: If I'm unlucky enough to get into a defensive shooting, chances are Murphy is going to bone me extra hard and make mine a "non average" problem even if the rule of 3s were correct, so I like to assume things could be worse.

I also think looking at real world distances in our daily lives is also useful. How long is the aisle at your local grocery store or Walmart? That might be a good distance to consider as a possible furthest distance shot you may be forced to make with your EDC, if Murphy decides the Rule of 3s doesn't apply to you that day.

Bender (or anyone else): what difference are you seeing with comps on splits? Are you dropping much time off something like a bill drill?

There's a marginal difference between a limited gun with optics and an Open Gun in scores - and, generally, Open Shooters are usually slightly more experienced than limited.

A bigger concern, at least for home defense, IMO, is how well you can use the gun in various lighting situations and with your vision. (IE, I need glasses. I prefer to have a green laser on my nightstand gun, because I can see the laser without glasses, in the dark. Irons are difficult for me, without glasses, and the optics I have played with, did not work well in the mixed lighting. - it's been years, perhaps they improved.)

Have they improved, yes, but...

In mixed lighting and low light while using a quality flashlight, you would still need the red dot cranked to at least 1 down from the max. Tried this in night match and training with an Acro P2, and the X300U will over power and wash out the dot if not cranked up. Completely functional and usable but plan accordingly.

I haven't seen hugely dramatic time differences in either drills or splits for a ported or comp'd gun vs non, but I also haven't deliberately shot any drills back to back with identical guns other than a comp to test it.

IMO, its a lot like a red dot or a good trigger. It can help performance, but if the underlying skill and practice isn't there it doesn't make that much of a difference.

I know a guy who made GM in USPSA with his carry gun, a bone stock G19. Give me my fancy G19 with the Gucci barrel and comp, red dot, trigger, magwell, etc to compete against him with a stock G19 and none of it will help me out shoot the guy, because he's a better shooter than I am.

stuff is fun, but skill>stuff when it matters, always.

I will caveat and say the smallest comp'd gun I've spent significant time shooting is a G19.

I have a G43 and a Sig 365XL, but neither has much done to it and neither has a comp.

A comp on the super small, snappier 9mm guns like the 43, 365, hellcat etc might provide more of a performance benefit than a comp does on a compact, but the point remains on buying a class with that money instead of a tool upgrade.

I only have comps on my Colquartsen 22/45's. I have never measured the splits, but they seem much better. This is on a low recoil rimfire gun with a fixed barrel. My scores have gone from mid pack to the top

I don't have the XL, just the base P365. From what I've read here it looks like putting a light on it will do me better as a nightstand gun. Theres a nice little range a few minutes away from me that I've sent a few boxes of rounds down, and they also offer self-defense classes that I'd like to take. I don't open or concealed carry, mostly just recreationally shoot and keep for home defense.
