This probably happened in the last few months, but we just noticed it today in a room we don't use much. Something cut or bit or ? off the lower 2-3 inches of an upstairs window screen. There's another window next to it with a screen that is fine.

What could have done this?

We live in the Ozarks and literally have 100s of squirrels with white oak, hickory and walnut trees all around the house. We got screens on all our windows and never been touched by squirrels.
We did have a Tom cat that shredded two like that cause he saw his reflection in the window.

A weak piece of screen. Daily sun and wind fray it like the end of a flag. The person or machine that put the liner over the screen did a poor job. It happens. I have a screen that slipped out from the liner I'm going to have to repair.
By the way , is that the heavier sunblock screen? If not, replace with the sunblock and then compare with the other lighter screen. The sunblock does make a difference.

Thanks all. The kid is grown and out! Interesting that it could be a manufacturing defect though the screen is about 14 years old. I'll wait a few weeks to see if it gets worse.

The material of the screen could weaken due to sun exposure, moisture, or temperature changes, making it more prone to tearing, it could have cause the screen material to expand and contract, potentially leading the tears.

Could also be rats trying to get to condensation on the window if you are somewhere it has been really dry. A few years ago in west Houston when it was really dry, we would see rats that were coming to our windows to lick condensation off the glass at night.

I've had birds do that to a few screens at my house. I was in the 2nd floor bathroom and heard something at the window. Sure enough, bird was pulling at the screen. It wasn't quite that bad though but it was all across the bottom like that.

Plastic container for pet food or bird seed that has a screw top lid with a gasket to make it waterproof so you can leave it outdoors.

They are decently heavy duty plastic containers. Started out in the horse world. I had one for our dog food.

Outside. The cold air inside cools the window panel. When warm humid air outside hits it, it cools down and loses its ability to hold as much water and the water condenses on the window. This was an older house with single pane windows. The windows we saw the rats on were upper palladium windows near the ceiling. One of the ac vents blew towards that wall and chilled those windows at night. Rats would come in off the trees onto the roof and then to the window. We were constantly battling to keep them out of the attic.
