What is your dream AR build? After all the home defense and rifle discussions, I started piecing together an SBR. So far this is going to be pretty damn close. I have a done a dozen or so builds (mostly for hog hunting), but this one is more a purpose built and bomb proof SHTF rig.

My wife is going to be pretty annoyed when those boxes start arriving tomorrow, and I am at a conference. Hopefully all the parts get here when I am away so I can build it this weekend. Will post pics.

Rifle:
LMT Mars Ambi Lower (will SBR
LMT 11.5 Shovelnose Monolithic Upper and Handguard
LMT Piston 12" 5.56 Barrel
LMT Piston G2 Chrome Finished BCG
Gieselle SD-E Trigger
Radian Raptor SD Charging handle
LMT Finishing kit for stock, grip, and lower parts

Muzzle Device:
Rearden Flashhider Plan B Muzzle Device
Huxwerks Ventum Suppressor (for now)

Optic:
Aimpoint Micro T2 with Unity Fast Mount

Light:
Surefire Scout light

Haven't purchased yet, but plan to:
Aiming Laser- Peq or Dbal (Mawl would be great but cost more than the gun)
Offset backup irons

Maybes:
magnifier
Law folder

Pic of a similar rifle.

What would you add? What is your dream build.

That's the truth.

Not sure what he considers his favorite but he's posted an LMT in the past.

The LMT MRP has been high on the list of dream builds since I first became interested in ARs in the late 2000s

I'd go DI, specwar upper with a 12.5" barrel and a lower 1/3 mount, but wouldn't change much else about what you have listed.

I already have a 12.5" upper with and NX8, so there isn't much motivation to change things up.

What led you to go piston vs DI?

I'm not as knowledgeable of individual parts as others. Usually just buy the entire rifle.

Obviously, most of these are parts are higher end.

What changes would you make to a stock LMT Mars L?

I like shooting piston better suppressed. I have a PWS and it shoots a lot cleaner than my DI BCM. I am a lefty so DI guns send a lot more gasses into my face.

So, funny story….

Close to the gun OP is building is in my safe.

LMT ambi lower, lmt upper (just the regular mrp, not the spec war so my entire gas block sticks out), 12" piston barrel/bcg. Acog and 45deg offset holosun on a unity mount, geissele h3 buffer/spring and irregular defense cheek riser.

I'm using a CGS Sci-Six suppressor but otherwise, pretty close.

I think you're really going to like that LMT, OP.

The trigger, stock, and muzzle device are probably the only things. You could play with the buffers and springs, but I doubt it's really needed.

I couldn't find a complete one anywhere in this configuration, so I am building this one.

I have a dream as well to build a LMT. Maybe one day...

As an owner of a shorty PWS in 7.62 and 5.56, why not make your PWS your HD rifle? (Outside of this is your excuse to buy once cry once on a "critical rifle")

I just built a new rifle with a PWS mklll mod 2 upper with a 11.8". Piston is the only way to go if you suppress

Have 2. Love it. As a lefty suppressed with hux 556k flow. Zero to nil gas whatsoever. Went with defender lower.

Unity is releasing their new 4x integrated optic and mount on the 13th.

Other fave is the 11.5 DI.

Gotta stop looking at these MRP builds....

For those who've tried both, how does a piston setup compare to a vented adjustable gas block like superlative arms?

I have a couple of different piston guns, some adjustable gas block guns (including the SA one), and some fixed gas guns.

The recoil on a piston gun is absolutely different than a DI AR. It can be more severe, but even if the felt impulse is the same its a different kind of impulse.

If I was chasing tunability with multiple suppressors and minimal recoil, an adjustable gas DI gun absolutely cannot be beat.

For me where a piston gun shines is with a vented or flow through suppressor as a left hand shooter. I eat way less gas with my piston guns than I do DI. In exchange, you don't have as much flexibility on tuning the gun for different cans or ammo and have a little more recoil, but I could feed my 12" LMT anything suppressed or unsuppressed and it would shoot. Some of my really tuned DI guns.....not so much.

Adding to bender.

The lmt piston 12inch barrel vs the 11.5 DI OR 12.5 di.

The piston is more front heavy. Noticeably. Not 30lbs difference but it's heavier

Have some friends on swat and one atf agent. Obviously they have handled rifles throughout the years.

Hand them the lmt piston. Their reaction is they aren't sure they would want to train or carry that for hours if on duty. I get it. Vs the Di lmt. It is heavier up front.

It's still badass though.

No comparison. Zero gas. Like bender says. Throw on a flow through can. Ridiculous

The bolt has no gas rings. If you are righty. The gas if any is minimal. If you are lefty like bender and I. The gas you do get is coming from chamber but even it is minimal.

PWS is my hog hunting rig right now in 300blk. Was close to doing another PWS for this but wanted to try something new. It might end up being my bump in the night gun eventually. Currently I use a BRN180 that's also made by PWS. It's a really fun and reliable rig.

I'm a lefty too which is why I shoot piston primarily.

I'm a lefty with a 556 and 6.5 grendel in AR format, both custom from EyeGuy (aero uppers and Odin works barrel). I have a BDE 762 suppressor that quick connects to both via Lantac dragons.
Been thinking about a great 300 blackout setup for better home defense and potential pig hunts at short range.

Does it make sense to look into piston 300 blackout or stick to gas/adjustable gas? Other advice? Also, what can for this application?

SMM48
How long do you want to ignore this user?

That is a toss up.

Lmt doesn't make a 300blackout piston

The two that come to mind who do are sig and pws.

Bender has the sig and has been through all the "if I knew then what I know now". Hopefully he'll reply again. I think he's a lefty

JJ has the pws. He's a lefty

Highvelo also has an pws but I believe he's a righty.

I like it better than a DD (that's the only other high end I've shot). Really smooth shooting rifle.

Friend of mine that is a retired Ranger just got a Wilson tactical SBR in 300 hamr and that is one sweet gun. When I asked him why not piston his response was the weight, he is trying to have a gun for all situations and hates carrying around the extra weight.

1-2 hours no big deal. 8-12 hours. Yeah. It's not a big weight differential at first. But stretch the hours, it matters to those who use professionally

If you told me we are going pigging…..and we will have to walk, and we are gonna be out there for 5 hours…..im probably bringing the DI

Yep, left eye dominant.

So, 300blk....love the round. Problem you run into with 300blk and ARs is if you tune it to run subsonic rounds well its going to be really overgassed for supers, and if you set it up to run well with supers it may not have enough gas to cycle subs. The suppressor you use can make a huge difference too on that front (ill expand on this in a minute).

Sig's solution to this problem in a piston system was the MCX with a two position gas valve. (-) on one side for supers, (+) on the other side for subsonic (or adverse depending on which MCX and which gas valve we are talking about). It's better than not having any options, but obviously how well either option works for you is going to depend heavily on both your ammo and your suppressor.

My MCX Virtus had an original early 6.75" barrel, which was designed to be used paired with the Sig SRD series of suppressors. Which would be great, if Sig hadn't discontinued the SRD line. So when I tried to use my 6.75" barrel with a CGS Hyperion suppressor, I had a lot of function issues until I could get the upgraded gas valve Sig now uses on their new 6.75" barrels.

Sig MCX also has a 25 deg taper built into the barrel. You can work around this and use adaptors for conventionally shouldered suppressors and muzzle devices, but if you have or want to buy a can that has an internal 25 deg taper, direct threading on the MCX is a fantastically easy and secure way to mount a can. Sigs new cans, CGS cans and some Q cans all come with this taper, and you can buy aftermarket adaptors to convert hub compatible cans to use the tapered direct thread.

The MCX can be a little gassy for a piston gun as well. Not a huge issue, but I do get more gas to the face with these guns than I do with other piston set ups.

Now that I've addressed the negatives....My MCXs are probably my favorite rifles. Incredibly adaptable, can completely change handguard, buttstock, barrel lengths, switch between 5.56 and 300blk all with one T27 torx bit and a torque wrench. I've run my main MCX as a 16" 5.56 at a run and gun, as a 5" 300blk pdw to travel with and everything in between.

Current set ups:

Top is 5" 300blk with canebreak SD handguard and CGS Hyperion K direct threaded.
Bottom is 6.75" 300blk with Virtus SD handguard and CGS Hyperion direct threaded.

I've also used a standard rattler upper and handguard on the virtus when traveling. Take the can off and it can fit into a backpack and not raise any eyebrows as "that guy is carrying a rifle" when checking in and out of hotels on the road.

I would absolutely get back into the MCX platform knowing what I know now. It's probably the best way to do 300blk stuff, IMO.

MCX is a great one too. I have enjoyed shooting my Spear LT. I think I'll probably buy the Rattler next, or Boombox if that ever comes out.
