Horses. If what I am hearing is true it's not good but trying to get few more details. They can use some prayers for sure.

How in the hell does rumensin end up in horse feed?

Edit: I guess it's more common than I realized for them to eat cattle feed. I wonder if that's what happened.

Has rumensin toxicity been confirmed?

I am hearing two different stories from their staff. I would rather not say anything until something is confirmed so that rumors aren't started.

I respect that. I have no relationship with LNC or Beutler but I think it's premature to point fingers at LNC or rumensin until an investigation. If this just happened today no way a cause can be determined this quickly.

how many horses did they lose?

Reports on FB are saying 40 to 60 horses died. Supposedly wrong feed was delivered & fed to horses, not contaminated feed. Link below says 40.

Absolutely devastating. I traded a few texts with Rhett Beutler today, and the family can absolutely use everyone's continued prayers.

Early reporting that many of the Beutlers' horses were accidentally fed cattle feed is false, according to VeneKlasen.

"What these horses got was actually a horse feed mix with a huge amount of the cattle drug monensin (brand name Rumensin) in it," VeneKlasen said. "This was a tragic case of human error somewhere along the line, because tiny amounts of monensin is poison to horses. It kills them. Monensin is used in some cattle feed, but this amount in this horse feed delivered to the Beutlers would have killed cattle, too.

Good grief. That is horrible.

Beutler & Son produces rodeos and are located in Oklahoma. According to an article written by Kendra Santos the Beutler's lost 70 head and counting of the bucking horse string. Thats about 95 years of genetics. A tragedy for sure.

This is just heartbreaking news. My wife grew up on horses with a herd of 40-50 and when she read it, she broke down in tears. Praying for them.

This is absolutely gut wrenching. I don't know how it could happen. The lawsuit against that feed company will no doubt be massive if those reports are accurate. That's a mistake that can't be made. I'm not sure how you can even begin to explain it.

No lawsuit will fix this. Some things are unreplaceable and 5 generations of bloodline is one. Also, no matter the money they get you can't just go out and buy this caliber of horses because they aren't for sale. The big guys frontier, Pete carr rodeo, rafter g, Sammy Andrew's, Calgary etc are not going to sale their bloodline and this caliber of horses to anyone. I spoke with Donnie Gay this week and he said it's one of the most devastating things he has ever seen in rodeo.

How much Roughstock or livestock does an operation like this have?

Did they have any stock out at rodeos or was this the entire herd?

If I were in that business I'd be thinking about having another location or so. Imagine if a tornado came thru there could've been the same outcome. Don't put all your eggs in the same basket, especially if they are so valuable as those bloodlines seem to be.

Sounds like a horribly sad situation.

Do they not keep semen frozen? I realize it would still take years to build back up, but it seems like a good failsafe to keep straws of semen on ice.

I saw on fb that Livestock Nutrition Center released a statement confirming it was monensin poisoning. They believe it was from a failed cleanout procedure and faulty sensor.

Sounds like they had been making cattle feed then switched over to horse feed then the monensin got into the horse feed.

Why you guys are praying say a prayer for the folks in Boerne. We were putting on a rodeo last night and the stands collapsed during the middle of the rodeo and multiple people hurt. Bull riding today has been canceled.

They lost 70, have approx 90 left. Years of breeding, NFR horses of the year etc. Horses worth many thousands each. Tens and hundreds of thousands. Each.

That's not good. While I'm not a PE, I've been around enough structural steel to take a guess that those stands were seriously lacking in load design.
