I had gone to all of my buildings the day before classes started so I would know where to find my classes. My first class was a Geology lab, and I had no idea that the only way to get from old Halbouty to new Halbouty without going outside was on the third floor. I entered the building through Old Halbouty. By the time I found my lab in new Halbouty, I was late and then found out the lab had been split, and my section was over in Old Halbouty.

When I walked in (now very late), there was only 1 seat left in the room. I ended up sitting next to this good looking blond girl who knew all the answers. As the son of a geologist, that intimidated me a bit. We were friends for years, and it only took us about 4 years to start dating. Now she is my wife. Along the way, I found out that she had taken Geology as an elective in high school, so that was why she already knew all the answers.

Talk about a chance meeting, wow. Great story!

I remember mine. It was in January, 1976. and my girlfriend (wife now) had been on campus for the fall semester. I had been working derricks in some of the coldest weather I had ever worked in on the Friday and Saturday before I drove up on Sunday.

I was from a pretty small town, and a bit overwhelmed by the size of the campus, walking pretty long distances to class and back to the dorm. And so many people. But she was there, and I wanted to be with her, so there I was! Her dad, who died when she was 5 years old, was class of '38, And it just felt right being at A&M.

At the beginning of every semester, for the first week or so, I would see two or three people with a lost look on their face and I would make it a point to ask if I could help direct them somewhere. I remembered how I felt when I was in their shoes.

Grew up in the cool high elevation mountains in a small ranching town where homes and even most cars had no air conditioning. I made my way to classes the first day in August driving my car without air conditioning, boots, jeans, long sleeve shirt and a heavy white crew neck t-shirt underneath. By the end of the day I had had my first Turkish bath!

I went clothes shopping that weekend!
