Anybody have any experience with stun guns. Daughter headed off to college in a week and wants one. Any trusted websites for this type of stuff? Academy carries some as well as Carters Country, but is there any difference in the manufacturers? She is not into carrying a handgun, yet.

Carrying a stun gun would make me nervous because I'd be worried that said criminal might mistake it for a real gun and react with more aggression than originally intended.
I'd recommend carrying pepper spray instead, but I'm certainly open to others responses.

I better clarify because I don't know which term is used for which. She wants the zappy ones with the probes that you actually touch the person with, not the guns that shoot the projectiles and wires.
Get her into a R.A.D. class for women. Rape Aggression Defense.
Number one of these classes is awareness....and keeping distance. Stun guns are close quarters toys/I mean tools.... get her pepper spray and teach he to run. Make distance. With a stun gun she won't react....she will wait till they are right up to her. It's a mindset. Same as when you are hunting with a rifle vs handgun vs bow vs blowgun vs spear vs knife vs stun gun.
My suggestion is anything else.
Above all remind her that she believes in Jesus and you fight to the death right there. Do not let them take you

I hear you, 100%. Mines going to Austin. Definitely have my concerns. She's pretty independent and will be carrying pepper spray and the stun gun. Just gonna have some talks with her before. And definitely looking into some of that training. She'd be into it. She's petite but ain't afraid. Thanks guys.

Look into Bryna Technologies less than lethal weapons. Stun guns are great ....If you have literally no other options ....think trapped in an elevator. Otherwise she would be better off with flinging elbows and knees than trying to dig that thing out of her purse and getting closer to them to use it. The only scenario when a stun gun would be useful is trapped in an elevator or if they have you in their grasp....and in that case be flailing.

Legal in all 50 states, essentially a CO2 pistol that spits out a tear gas ball instead of a paintball.
My only caution is it can be mistaken for a real gun which might not be good, depending on the situation.

FWIW I am an OC instructor in addition to firearms. Stun guns, pepper ball guns, etc are well-intentioned toys that don't work in the real world.

A good can of wasp spray in the car door works pretty well and you can reach out and touch someone with that!! A CCL instructor gave me that freeby… stay safe!

At our hunting ranch in Carrizo every nightstand and end table had a can of wasp spray on them for not wasps. Never had to use them thank goodness.
Just a tool that can be taken into areas with metal detectors to ensure one's safety. For example, if one's family member is traveling overseas to an area that is not so safe, I feel better that she at least has some measure of protection.Courtesy Flush said:

I am hearing good things on the Byrna guns but not familiar with them.
Edge weapons are great for women. My teenager just got hers through abia but then got popped with it at DIA, its being mailed back.
The psychology aspect might be most important accepting that evil exists and that I could be a target of that evil so that vigilance or awareness becomes the basis for avoidance and deterrence.

Yep. I started carrying pepper spray in addition to a gun and a knife once this truly clicked. It is insanely more likely that I'd have to pepper spray a homeless dude having a psychotic episode than employ deadly force. It's also way more preferable than going hands on.
Got her pepper gel, loud ass alarm thingy as previously mentioned, tazer, bought myself a new knife for my belt and collapsible baton. Laid it all on the counter and cashier said "damn, y'all mad at somebody?"
Thanks to everybody for the tips and stuff. Will be going further into some training as well, hopefully very soon. Dropping her off Wednesday. First child headed to college. Oof.

Pepper gel isn't a great choice because it takes too long for the carrier medium (the gel) to evaporate... the OC doesn't have any effect before that. That's going to be 30s MINIMUM and more like over a minute. A pissed off person can do a LOT of bad things to you in that span of time.
