Howdy, well Beryl scared the poop out of us. Too old to fight no A/C and spoiled food without electricity, Harvey nearly did me in, time to buy and install the standby generator. Had been researching Generac. Had my electrical bunch out to examine where and how the install would go. They told me that they had been installing more Cummins than Generac, and that Rockport had local Cummins dealer/service.

Anyone have any information, Pro or Con on either make to help me make a decision. Cost is really not the object here, have bitter the expected $10k bullet. It is not a case of what is affordable but rather an absolute must. From the oilfield know that Cummins is a well built and respected name.

We have a Cummins RS20AC with a direct connect to Natural Gas. No complaints. From a practical standpoint I would go with whichever dealer is local and will provide service. Our dealer comes out twice a year to do the maintenance and it exercises itself for about 15 minutes every Monday afternoon.

I agree that you probably should decide on the dealer and who will service it, and see what's available. We decided to get a generator after the May "straight line wind" event caused us to lose power for 6 days.

I really wanted a Cummins water cooled unit (much quieter) but the cost would've been $40k for my house. The air cooled Cummins sized for our needs was a new model, and no one in Houston had them. We ended up ordering a larger Generac air cooled unit, for a little more than half the cost. I think Generac sells the most generators of all the companies, and a lot of folks we know in Memorial (Houston) have been happy with them.

I'd expect a 2-3 month wait to get a generator installed if you're in the Houston area. We ordered ours from Generator Supercenter (or Superstore) in late May/early June, and it won't be installed until early August. Of course, we don't have electricity again after Beryl.

Thanks for the replies! Here is the deal:
1. Local Cummins Dealer, Rockport, TX, Aransas Propane
2. Scheduled appointment for July 24th, first available
3. Do both propane and NG, of course would go with NG.
