Here's the story…. TLDR at the bottom….

My dad passed away November of 2023…screw cancer…especially pancreatic…

He had a decent assortment of hunting rifles, shotguns, hand-guns, and a few that were mine as a little kid growing up…my mom was hanging on to them until I got a gun safe to store everything (I have 3 kids)…

For whatever reason, she decided to stash them in the master bathroom bathtub because they needed to be moved while workers were in the house replacing flooring from where they were normally kept…somehow water got turned on and everything got wet and damaged…don't know how long they were in the water either…

My cousin who's been hunting for the last 40 years since he was a kid (also Aggie) took them apart, dried as best he could, oiled everything, and re-assembled but a lot of them still have rust and a fair decent bit of wood damage and metal damage/discoloration.

I took everything to Texas Gun Club in Stafford. Nothing negative about them they were great and took good care of me…also admired what I was dropping off asking if I was considering selling one of the .357 magnums…course they didn't know the story of my dad and after explaining I was met with, "Don't sell 'em. Keep those."

BUT…spoke with the gunsmith today at that location and he recommended I take them somewhere else because he wouldn't be able to restore the wood or fix the the damage (discoloration) to the metal. And I appreciated that he clearly wants the work done well and said I'd be paying him to only get half the job done and would still need to take it somewhere else to get everything fully restored cause of the damage extent…

He recommended Lohman Gunsmithing in Houston. Well…after reading the most recent reviews from this past year I'm not sure they're the best option…

So…looking for recommendations for gunsmiths that could help with what I'm dealing with. And I don't mind traveling if they're that good. I live in Richmond, TX.

TL;DR = need a dang good gunsmith recommendation who also does restorative work for guns with water damage.

Picture of the rifles….not the best picture but wood damage is obvious and if you can zoom in you'll see more….

Hand guns as well….harder to tell on these but the wood handles look rough in person and there's rust on all 3 of these…..you can also see a closer look at the damage to the wood on the rifles in the first picture…

Didn't post the pic of the smaller guns I had when I was a kid….damage wasn't as bad to those and honestly wouldn't be too upset if those didn't get fixed…..

But these pictured hold a lot of sentimental value….the better looking scoped .243 in the first picture belonged to my Papaw and is OLD….yet still fired great and my middle son got his first deer with it earlier this year….

Any Colts should go to cylinder and slide, an outfit in Nebraska. There lots of folks who will tell you they can work on an old colt revolver, there are very few that actually should. These guys have worked on a couple for me and do top notch work.

Thought I'd share an update as well as the information of the man responsible for this amazing work!!!! Not posting pictures of every firearm but definitely showing the work done on some of the worse ones I had.

The poster TX_COWDOC recommended me to John Powers in Louisiana and holy crap am I glad he did. Awesome awesome man who's more passionate about his work than I had anticipated (and I was going in with high expectations after talking to him). Totally blew me away!

His website is powersmetalworks.com

Here's some before and afters of some of the most damaged ones (but I couldn't be happier with every firearm that came back to me!)
