Anybody have insight on those electro magnetic shark deterrents and if they work? Snake oil?

I don't wanna risk sounding like a p*ssy, but I'm contemplating getting one for wading the surf.

You are 5x more likely to be hit by lightning than bit by a shark. Invest in a lightning rod first

Umm yeah but that data is probably a bit skewed considering it probably includes the Nebraska farm boy who never has and never will dip a toe in the ocean and the guy who surfs 5 days a week or wade fishes 8 days a month.

You're in luck. Shark Week starts Sunday and I'm sure they'll have an episode or two dedicated strictly to shark repellants.

That's true for the average person. If you fish the surf often, I doubt it holds. Plus there's no harm in trying to mitigate risk.

Your risk of getting bit by a snake is extremely low, but many ppl still wear snake boots.

The guys that are real heavy into wade fishing don't carry stringers anymore, floating bag for the win.

Yep, there are two different personal cell videos where there are shark(s) in the first gut. The one from this woman and another down the beach.

According to friends sharks had been seen for the past couple of days close in, in the first gut. Larger sharks. They should have been shot. Especially on the 4th weekend.

Tell me you didn't read the article without telling me.

The husband had to drop his wife, who was already bit because the shark was following them in so he could fight it off a second time. Good sharks are supposed to bite and lose interest.

Edit add. After reading your comment a second time you may be thinking the shark followed by LEA was not the same shark that attacked?

Im gonna leave the comment up for those that chose not to read it, and I am of the understanding it was followed from the attack to the aerial video but I could be wrong.

Bullets don't penetrate water more than a foot or two at most before becoming harness fragments. They wouldn't harm a shark with a rifle. (Mythbusters tested the heck out of this)

Killing s shark may well attract more sharks.

I have a buddy who's been down there all weekend he told me the water is so low *they* think the shark was just cruising up and down the first gut almost trapped in there at places.

Crazy how the water level has changed. A couple weeks ago after Alberto folks were blasting west out of Peyton's over the normal shoreline fishing the salt flats along the El Sauz. Now the water is all gone and it's a graveyard.

There's been research done on those. They work well for a shark that's just casually cruising and not in feeding mode.

When sharks have decided to go in for a bite, it doesn't deter them from the attack.

At different times, especially in the fall prior to norther's rolling through, I have seen some big ass sharks in the first gut. You are right, they basically get stuck in there on a wonky tide or after a norther or storm moves the sand around. Up by the east cut we watched a great hammerhead, who knows how big but GD big, cruise up and down the first gut. I have also seen tigers hooked and caught in the first gut.

Several years ago there was a medium size Mako caught from the beach on SPI, in the condo areas. Weird as hell.

Absolutely odd tide and water levels cause all kinds of oddities. Corky (RIP) from Mansfield, when he had his little shop and deal had pics of a tiger trapped in a flat after a storm, large one too from what it looked like on 80's polaroid's.

I have seen countless bull's over the years in the first gut while going up and down the island and I have seen them ball bait/herd drum in that cove on that is east of where the rocks end on the south side of the east cut jetties. Bulls are just so aggressive.

Yes sir, understood and agree. That shark in the video that I saw, and it was sent via cell and I haven't seen it shared as it was someone she knows, was in the first gut and the water there isn't deeper than about 1.5', maybe two. That shark was right on top of the water and cop was maybe 10' from it.

In the bad of days of fishing there was a group of jetty and surf fisherman that targeted big sharks. I know they caught several large tigers off the Boca Chica Jetty's and also a variety of others. They were fishing to kill, and when they would have a large shark and get it close in they would shoot it before messing with it.

When those bulls are stirred up it is best to GTF away from them. I agree that maybe shooting them could cause more trouble. But after the second or so report of a bite the SPI cops needed to have cleared the water from the park south. If it had been a 17 year old with a cooler of beer or someone with an open fire cooking weenies on the city beach they would have had the SWAT team and helicopters out there.

But that shark in the first gut after a bite, my immature self backs people up and shoots it.

Actually 2 guys in our group on the same boat got hit using the same floating bags. If the shark wants them they will take it. We typically use what we call our homemade shark baskets. Typical square laundry basket with pool noodle zip tied around the top and a mesh laundry bag zip tied inside so we can keep the fish from jumping out.

They work great but are kind of bulky. People look at us funny when they see our "laundry baskets" floating upside down just to avoid the drag. Once we start catching fish you obviously gotta turn it right side up.

I do have a couple of those shark magnets on a 18 ft long stringer that I had built and I haven't had any issues with it but my pastor had the same rig and a shark hit his…I though Jesus had returned watching him walk on water to get away from the shark
