How long do you want to ignore this user?
Hi all -- first time posting on the Outdoors board.

I have a nutgrass infestation in my flower bed in the backyard. I'm been hitting it with weed killer, but the tubers keep spreading and new ones keep popping up.

Has anyone fought a successful fight against nutgrass? I want to keep the desirable plants, so I worry about using so much weed killer.

Any insight is appreciated!

Give it the Sedgehammer!!!!! Seriously, it worked great for my yard.

Sledgehammer eot

Expensive but it lasts awhile and does the trick.

Dumb question - is this something you mix and spot treat with or broadcast spray?
fishngame06

Yes, mix in water and preferably a surfactant with it in a gallon sprayer. Spray the weeds and area. Re-apply again after a week and then spot treat from then on.

I had a crazy amount of nutsedge in a flowerbed area 5' x 10' area 4 years ago. Fought them hard that year with this and haven't shown up again since.

Sedgehammer barely turned my nutsedge yellow.

Certanty/Sertay (generic label) actually works.

With any nutsedge it takes 2-3 applications a couple of weeks apart to kill the grass you can see, then constant vigilance to nuke the surviving grass as early as possible. And it will still take years to kill it all, if you actually can.

This. I've fought it intermittently over many years. It gets bad enough that I make it a priority to treat it. Knock it back pretty good but I never eradicate it forever. As long as it's not too bad I usually get consumed by other priorities. Even when I was really focused on repetitive treatments to try and "kill it forever" I never could quite get there.

We had that in our beds too. It looked like it would never be eliminated. We used that nutsage killer on it which did okay but what really eliminated it was weeding it until it was gone. A few would crop up but nothing like it was so I'd dig those up until eventually it was all gone. I think it came from new soil or mulch we put on the beds.

Can almost guarantee it did.

If you have a small area, you can probably eventually get it by pulling the tubers and nuts out, but if it's a large area you have to resort to chemical warfare and maybe fire.

I have a small area in my yard that I didn't want to get out of control. I bought this and sprayed the area last Friday, as of yesterday, everything is dead.

Nut grass is

Not

A

Grass.

It is a sedge.

It will not respond to herbicides that usually kill grass. The sedge hammer recs should help.

I have a flower bed with lantana, salvia, and a bumper crop of nutsedge. I pull the visible nutsedge weekly. I have tried digging up the tubers. Will the stuff you guys are recommending kill the lantana and salvia?

I don't know about the ornamentals but it didn't hurt my Bermuda at all.

The Dismiss is supposed to kill the tubers to help reduce future growth as well.

I've used Sledgehammer and Ortho and I'm in the camp where they barely turned the nutsedge yellow. Need to try the Certainty.

Hijacking to ask about what post-emergent I can use to kill crabgrass in a bermuda lawn.

I put down pre-emergent but the crabgrass has hit me hard.

Thanks for all the advice. I've been using Ortho like crazy. I may have to try Sedgehammer.

Glad to know I'm not the only one who is frustrated by this weed.

Almost all of these list as not recommended to use on St. Aug. Will it kill St. Aug grass if a nuke large patches of this stuff in my grass?

I've been doing this in the flowers bed L mentioned and there is simply too much of it! I've been digging it out for weeks.

I have put down two applications of Dismiss on my yard, about a week apart from one another. No results so far. I bought it about 3 years ago though, so maybe it expires?

I would check with the manufacturer because I put mine down and had some yellowing within 24 hours and that was on Thursday of last week. Fast forward to today and it is mostly dead. I had a lot so measured out the square feet and it came to about 3000 rounded up. I took the lowest measurement on the cup provided and put three of those into 2 gallons of water to cover the area.

Also, the labeling was very specific that it should be applied when temp was less than 85 degrees.

I've used this successfully in my Zoysia. You can get it on Amazon.

Drive Herbicide; Quinchorlac is the generic.

I asked this same question not too long ago to a buddy of mine that is all up in that type of world.

My question as well.

What's effective, but safe for St. Augustine?

My grass is very sparse in that portion of the yard, looks like it nuked everything it touched. I would be careful when applying.

Sedgehammer knocked out a large, thick patch of nutsedge in my backyard. I ordered the packet off of Amazon and hit it once and that was all it took. As for the crabgrass that took over my front yard, it's a pain in the butt to kill. Hit it once with Quinclorac and it came back even stronger. Second dose went down today.
