Looking for a taxidermist recommendation, I don't want a half ais one.

There is a taxidermist in wheatland Wyoming that is the best I have ever seen, and he has done some elk heads for me that are better than all other I have ever seen. He is a Mennonite and wins all kinds of national awards.

I am just looking for someone local that is good, preferably San Antonio area but can travel. I'm tempted to take it to wheatland because I know that guy is the best I've seen,

I use this guy for most my mounts. He's a San Antonio cop that does taxidermy. You know he will be the one personal mounting your animal. I've referred a lot of guys to him and everyone's been happy.

It's a whitetail buck my deceased uncle shot in Freer about 50 years ago. The buck is a freak, its ear was lodged back behind his horn, and was notched in half, my uncle lived on one of the best hunting ranches in Duvall county his whole life, and this bucks horns were the strangest he had come across. It's like they were broke fighting, and when they grew out they grew out wild like Medusa.

I'll have to take one next time I am at the ranch. It's about a 2 hour drive from my currentl location.

I've been happy with shoulder mounts from Ottea's.

Double Nickel did an axis for me and I thought they should have used a bigger form as this was a big deer.

If he is still doing taxi work, do not use Palmer Bordelon.

I've used Marty Binnion (Devine), Verrips (Floresville/La Vernia), Palermo (Bryan), and Charlie Stein (Shiner).

Of those, the most attentive (to my expectations) with a quality mount was Charlie Stein. Small shop and he's covered up with work so you have to be patient. He's doing several for me now.

A guy we have used for many years is Rodney Schott of Schotts Taxidermy in Helotes Texas. We have sent lots of our hunting clients from our ranch to him and everyone has been very happy. Personally I have had him do all our animals for a number of years. He is fantastic with Elk, Mule Deer, WT's and all exotic species. Excellent with cats also.
I know he has won a bunch of competitions etc. And he is a great guy and fair.

I have not had anything mounted there, but I have been in there several times dropping off or picking up processing orders and have seen the work he has in house. He does very good work. We did get a couple of axis hides made into couch pillows there and they came out fine.

Interesting fact: James Newport that owns Mesquite Creek actually used to work at Palermo's back in the days. He's also an Aggie.

Myself and my BIL both have been pleased with his work. Not "national award winning" - but very competent at the standard fair.

Well thanks. Not much story. My best to date and second trip to Sonora. First week of this year, it was terribly slow hunting. This was only second mature buck we saw after 6 days of hunting.
Spotted at about 800 yds and 200' down in a bowl maybe a quarter section I guess, working some does watched for about an hour then decided to put on stalk. 1 1/2 hours later we topped out on a little rise about 100 yds from where he had been and nothing. Tried to sit and wait but wind picked up a bit and was swirling down in that bottom so decided to get out and went back up to original Perch on south side of bowl and watched for a while.
Didn't see him or does, so worked around to north side of bowl maybe a mile and set up to glass. Stayed there about 4 hours hence the sunburn, and glassed. Guides had their spotter and using mine while I used binos. Moved again to east side of bowl leaving one guide on north. After about an hour that guide on north spotted him working one doe towards west side of bowl.

I headed around to that side and was looking for someplace to set up and spotted him about 40 yds away but directly behind doe, oblivious that I was there.
Wanted him to move to get clean broadside because I had about 5" of top of back visible, but after a few minutes took the shot and basically spined him but doe lived to fight another day.
I'd have felt more comfortable with that shot out maybe 100-150 yards because I was sighted 1" high at 200. I normally sight in 1" high at 100 so not as familiar with that trajectory.
Cape was confiscated by a mentally unstable and very unfriendly customs guy for some kind of particle of something not moving or crawling, that fell out of cape during inspection. After that inspector walked off, the original one checking my cape even apologized for the guy having a bad day, but not sorry enough to give me my cape back.
