Sister-in-law is a geologist and as a unique anniversary present I'm wanting to create some sort of unique arrangement/mosaic of petrified wood pieces.

Does anyone know of any public walking trails or wooded areas around B/CS that I may be able to source pieces from? Alternatively, would be happy to clear some from anyone's property that wants to part ways with it (I'll bring the sixer).

TIA for any suggestions!

Lick Creek Park might be a good place.

Most city parks will have a rule that prevents anyone from removing any part of the parklands. Surprisingly, College Station does not have that rule, at least not on their website. Look in gullies, the deeper the better. Moving water will uncover petrified wood. I've hunted for p.w. in gullies on private land near Somerville, and have found huge pieces that way. The area around Somerville is crawling w/p.w., and a lot can be found in the Bremond area. I have a feeling that all of this part of TX probably has that stuff.

If you get really serious about p.w. hunting, or rock-hounding in general, look at the Estwing Tools website.

There are a few very large pieces on the traditions golf course. Just chip some off.

Absolute boat loads of it in gravel bars on the shorelines of Lake Somerville. No big pieces but tons of small pieces. Also in the Brazos River bottom…when it is low, that is.

I wouldn't say "petrified."

More like "alarmed."

Just kidding. I was thinking of this a couple of months ago. I saw petrified wood all the time when I was a kid. As a matter of fact, my 4th grade teacher, Mrs Montgomery, asked kids to bring her petrified wood and they built a new house and faced their entire fireplace in petrified wood that kids had brought her.

There is a lot of it behind Scotty's House. There is a slope there above a drainage ditch that always washes and reveals more.

Dear Penthouse, I had been wanting to give my sister in law a piece of my rock hard wood for years but never got a chance until I came up with a plan…

When the subdivision back behind what used to be Aerofit was built, there were literally tons of pieces of petrified wood being pulled out of there, and HUGE pieces. Some friends and I took a picture of 4 of us standing on an entire petrified stump that had been pulled out. It was MASSIVE.
