There absolutely are sperm whales in GoM. 100%. I've seen whales several times in the gulf, but it has been many many years.

Great old story about a whale in Port Arthur. People travelled days by train to see it.

The author deserves another thread. His story about bear hunting in the Big Thicket, and a few on black panthers in Texas are great reading.

Crappy internet in garner so a lot of the thread didn't load. Awesome. It is amazing to see an apex predator of that size in the wild.

Most of the whales I see at mategorda look like they came from Mexico

Broke jetties at sunrise Initially headed on a Hoover overnighter.
Snotty out of the chute. NOAA 2-3s were washing machine whitecap 3-4s
Inside port started having oil pressure sensor issues and decided to stay on the shelf.
Deep dropped on some decent tiles.
Slow roller 2-3s finally showed up
Contemplated going deep on 3 until Outside starboard fuel pressure alarms.
Released an 8' hammer
Lost some big AJ at a cutoff dropping giant hard tails.
Solid rainbow on a flatline with a ribbon.
Too many cuda
Spotted whales on the way back
State water goldfish were nothing of size or numbers. Expected more, caught less
Broke the jetties at twilight safe & sound again.

Another beautiful day on the water

Convicts are thick at the nearshore rigs, always a hoot!
Where can I get my decoder ring for this?

Went fishing with the intent to fish all night at a deep water platform called Hoover-Diana 160 miles offshore.
Seas were rougher than the forecast.
Boat problems
Decided to fish in 300-800 ft of water instead of going past where it drops off really deep.
Caught some tilefish fishing the bottom in 700-800 ft of water.
Seas got way better. thought about going deep again…
Boat problems
Worked our way back home
Lost some big Amberjack dropping big live hard tail fish as bait. We were fishing at an old oil rig that used to stick out of the water until the Obama administration paid people a bunch of money to cut them off
Released a big shark and caught a Rainbow Runner drifting a ribbonfish as bait.
Saw whales.
Tried to catch red snapper in state waters with limited success and all of them were small.
Got home at dark.

Sheepshead are fun to catch at the closer rigs visible from the beach.

I'm not seeing the photos or video. Maybe they were taken down? That may be just as well. NOAA would probably freak if there were verified sightings of Rice's whales in the western GOM.
