This is why we never wish or pray for storms on account of making a buck, like many roofers do. While it's a means of keeping the lights on and I enjoy helping others, it's good to be aware of what misfortune must occur for that to be the case and the stress it adds to people's lives. It's always "somewhere else" until it's not. Occasionally, Mother Nature likes to provide me with a not so modest reminder lest I forget my place and purpose.

This is far west side San Antonio at the house. Trailer skylight busted out, pvc trough pipe busted, truck got some dings but I intentionally put it under a tree, hopefully it's mostly ok. The garden shows a less than ideal situation for tomatoes and corn. The garden is a side business for the wife and kids, hopefully it will recover. It's a pretty minor first world problem, and I hope that remains the case for the local farmers around me and people's property.

I already have a a schedule for the day and I assume the rest of the week will continue accordingly. My own home and problems will have to wait.

In the meantime, the kids are about to get their learn on with trailer repairs and plumbing…no free lunches, kids.

But, with all that, the yard got watered, so that was nice.

We had a windstorm a few months after we had our brand new roof put on. It knocked some huge branches from a pine onto our garage roof and broke several rafters. So, another insurance claim and $25k more damage.

Castroville area? That place is blowing up! Lots of roofs to work on.

That is tough getting all that damage.

I went through Bellville yesterday- they had baseball size hail few weeks ago. Holy moly those areas were absolutely wrecked. First time I saw what really big hail will do.

How in the world can you prevent damage from hail that size?

Good news is, in my experience, gardens that get hammered with hail early on, seem to produce record crops. Anecdotal, but that's been my experience.

You don't. I've seen hailstones go through shingles, roof decking, insulation and Sheetrock

To be fair, that was a once in a lifetime storm. Usually it's just shingles that get destroyed

Yeah, this is the castroville area but I'm out in Rio Medina. We're mostly fields and cows, but these are slowly and surely being developed.

This size hail will spare a vehicle if you get it under a heavy canopies live oak. It still dented my truck but there are less than 10 minor dents to pull. If it's in the open, it's far far worse. Typically, I'll get it in the hay barn or somewhere but this storm took a jog and I didn't have time to even toss some blankets on the truck. The nicer trucks are in the shop. Those old scraggly comforters you have laying around for covering winter plants can be spread across a hood and top of the car and it will prevent most damage. If it' gets to tennis ball size, you're hosed anyway.

For roofing, it will dent standing seam in some cases but it won't destroy it and many insurance carriers won't cover the cosmetic damage if it these days. For asphalt shingles, they won't survive.

This storm looked like it was going to bandera but it didn't. I looked at a dozen roofs today from Leon valley to castroville and it seems most damage was quite localized.

Even a mile down the road the hail was pea sized.

Tomorrow I think I'll spend the morning fixing the other things and I hope the garden has a record crop, that's encouraging to hear. I'll trim the tomatoes when it dries out. The corn should stand back up. I'll post pics of the craters in my yard garden….its neat. The eggplant doesn't know how close it came from the end of its life.

From one gardener to another, I hope that hail killed off some of those weeds.

On a serious note, I'm sorry that happened. Weather can be unforgiving. I hope it all works out for you and your family and neighbors.
