I have carried a SAK for my childhood, and then switched to a Leatherman. I find I use those tools as much as the blade. I carried a few flippers for a while because they were handy and I had this idea that "if I needed it to defend myself" it would be nice, but as stated above, it's not going to be worth a crap. I stopped carrying those because as I descended into this mindset of "self defense" even with things like the clinch, or the goofy ones you wear around your neck so you can be strangled easily, I realized my efforts were best utilized getting a tool I use 99% of the time. Otherwise, it's turning into Dwight Shrute with shivs, auto knives, and throwing stars. Carry a good blade for work, carry a pistol for self defense, and spend less time worrying about the .01% chance I'm getting shanked at Arlan's. If it's your time, it's your time.

That said, if I only used knives, I'd get an automatic or fixed blade because they are nice for one handed operation.

One OP and others might like are the CIVIVI knives. Cheap and good for the everyday.

I've been carrying the smaller Lander 1 for about 2 years now. The 2 has better steel in the blade and is sized up. Very well built and rides almost unnoticeable in the pocket.

For "business" I mostly carry a Kershaw Ken Onion. I forgot what knife I carry when I need something bigger but tend to stick to the Kershaw for every day stuff

Thanks, all, appreciate the recommendations. For others who may be looking - I received an email from Case today, announcing their newest additions, the Longhouse and the Highbanks. They are both based on traditional design - specifically the Barlow. They both have a clip for pocket carry, but the Highbanks has a shorter blade and no flipper or thumbstud. The Longhouse has a longer blade (3.4") and a front flipper. If I were to get either, it would be the Longhouse. Here's link to it: https://caseknives.com/products/smooth-black-burlap-micarta-longhouse

And here's a link to a video where they talk about both:

I've got one of these Red. There's some cheap knockoffs being made today but the original Severtech knives are boss. And it's an auto folder. I just have to be careful it doesn't open in my pocket and slice something off.

Ordered one of these off of Amazon because it looked pretty decent and the low price. Received this morning, and I'm really impressed. This just might be the best knife out there for the money. Excellent quality, very smooth operation.

I think the Axis lock / crossbar lock knives are best for EDC.

I love the Mini-Adamas from Benchmade... specifically the Carbon Fiber / Brass accented one with Magnacut steel.
Big, beefy, tough knife that can accomplish pretty much any task.

When I want something smaller I go with a Mini-Griptilian with a combo edge.

The Mini-Freek and Mini-Bugout area also good for a small, easy to carry blade.

If you want another big chonk; the Amphibian from Microtech is awesome with a recurve blade and the Ram-Lok system is very nice.

I'd encourage everyone to check out the subreddit r/Knife_Swap; where you can buy lightly used and Like New in Box knives for 30% of MRSP from fellow knife collectors/enthusiasts. I've used multiple times with great sucess.

I sadly lost my mini grip after years of daily carry. You basically can't find them to buy anymore so I went with the mini bugout. It's ridiculously light, maybe too much so. Almost feels cheap. I just got it a week ago, so jury is still out. Right now, I'd go back to the mini grip if I could

I've lost too many knives to carry anything of consequence. I carry flippers for daily functionality of opening my wife's damn Amazon packages and other mundane stuff. I have a small CRKT now.

If I was worried about safety, a small fixed blade or chisel point would be my choice along with my EDC

I have a Boker I inherited from my grandfather that never left the box, but was a prize for the "longest abnormal tine" in the Venado Grande deer contest at Temple/Belton Feed one year.

I either have it or an Old Timer that was my other grandfather's every day.

I have their Cheaper Option and have been super pleased. I keep it sharpened with a worksharp sharpener and it gets sharp.

I'm pretty sure I've carried a pocketknife every single day of my life since I got out of HS but not once has my concern been about using it for self-defense and thus needing rapid deployment of the blade.

So my question, are y'all using self-defense as a primary concern? Otherwise, why worry about the spring-assist opening or whatever?

I mean, I carried the same Buck Stockman that my father gave me when I was about 7 until a few years ago when I gave it to my oldest and now I generally carry a custom Langbein single-blade with mammoth ivory scales that I inherited. Either that or an inexpensive freebie knife that I got for renewing my Ducks Unlimited membership- it's a surprisingly good knife. I have plenty of others but these two are in my daily carry and it really depends on what I'm wearing- namely the fact that I don't have to go into an office and wear shorts most of the time that can more easily lose the knife from my pocket so I'll carry the freebie.

Looking for recommendations for a decent EDC pocket knife with clip, preferably in the $100-$200 range. I have plenty of Benchmade knives, including the Bugout, so no need to mention those. Can be flipper or thumb stud. Any recs greatly appreciated.
Just curious…how many EDC knives does one need? I mean if you don't carry the same knife every day, how can it be an EDC? I simply replace mine every 5-6 years and pass the old one along. Current is a Benchmade Casbah auto in blue.

Knife guys are really weird. It's basically a small sword, so they are almost a weird as sword collectors.

I agree, with you BTW. I'm on my second Benchmade Mini Barrage. The old one stays in the truck for now and my twins will get both when I get a new one.

I am not concerned from a self defense perspective, but mainly just focused on ease of opening.

I really like being able to open with one hand. Especially when I am fishing.

Also any folding knife where you have to dig in with your fingernail and try to open it I am out on. Way more convenient to have an open assist.

If we really want this thread to get interesting, someone should post about the best way to sharpen their EDC knife.
You can't fix stupid.

I carry the benchmade bugout mini. Have a full bugout also. Sometimes switch out but the mini is preferred for in the pocket.
