okay...I'm a baitcaster dude and have been since I started fishing as a kid. At almost 49 years old it's sadly almost comical how bad I am with spinning reel. I'm getting better though b/c it's what my wife fishes with, my son does some as well, and i've used spinning reels more on ultralight tackle.

Need to spool up some new spinning reels. I've read online different opinions on a particular aspect of how the line goes off the spool and onto the reel. Some say it matters to minimize line twist and memory. Some say it doesn't matter at all.
They point to having the line come off the spool a certain direction...i..e clockwise or counterclockwise depending on how your'e facing the reel.

what say you OB...does this matter?

I guess I could see it possibly for mono and maybe fluoro. But not as much for braid. If it's even true.

Not sure it matters either way with braid, but I received this as a gift and it works pretty well. Def can't hurt.

Label on the spool facing down is what I always heard.

Ha, I've always heard facing up. That's how I've always done it and had no problems. Maybe it's fine either way.

Run line through eye in front of reel. Hold spool with pencil in the center of spool so line is pulling off spool straight in line with reel. No twist. Fast and simple.

Negative. That's what you do for a baitcaster.

This is how you spool a spinning reel:

https://www.tacklewarehouse.com/bass-fishing/how-to/how-to-spool-a-spinning-reel.html

Basically, do not "unroll" it with the pencil in the center of the line spool so the line spool spins. The line spool should be laid down flat and generally pull the line off counterclockwise. Spooling straight on causes line-twist.

I have braid on the spinning rods set up for my wife and daughters.
Switched to braid - no issues with the "memory" that you see with monofilament.
Tie a leader to the braid if you prefer to tie your lure to mono.

The "label up/down" on monofilament makes a difference if the line is spooled clockwise or counterclockwise based on the label....

Just go with braid.

I think it makes the same difference with braid despite braid being memory resistant.

Did this not too long ago ... not sure it matters, label down or up. Biggest thing is set the spool on the ground so that you are in control of how quickly it comes off. Anything you can do to slow it down is good. I also tried to run it through some line conditioner and that seemed to help. Take it slow and fill your spool 1/4 to 1/8 from the top.

I put mine in boiling water afterwards to help with the memory issue. Other than that, letting them sit for a few years does the trick.

Tarpon Chaser has given the correct advice.

Disregard the label....if it's coming off counter clockwise keep reeling.

If not stop and have a beer. After the beer flip the spool over.

If it's not coming off clockwise flip the spool over, reel and give up beer drinking.

This thread explains why my spinner spools up sometimes.. I always use a pencil regardless of what type of reel I'm putting Line on.. good thread

Also, don't reel when the fish is pulling drag. That just twists the line.

You guys are making me seem like an amateur and I've done a lot of fishing … I recently spooled a new spinner .. thought it was just bad mono !

I dunno, man.

This is a new level of overthought on a task I didn't think was possible. For 30 years of using mono and braid I've stripped old line off with my drill and a dowel and then installed new by threading it all through the rod and onto the reel and reeling it up with the new line stuck on a pencil clamped in my bench vice. It seems a pretty straightforward process but clearly there is more to it than I ever thought possible. I've done the same for any reel I spooled and never had any issues people seem to say need fixing.

Wrong way and right way sounds like the counter guys bullsheet at Orvis or FTU to bait people into a spool job.

Just put the GD line on and get on with it.

No problem with this approach imo … just be careful with the line on the pencil. I watched half dozen you tube videos and decided to generally take this approach minus a drill. Previously, and for swapping fly lines out on reels, I built a line spooling machine that basically works like your pencil in a vise. The problem I have is the spool gets going too fast and the line will foul up if I don't dampen or slow down the process. I need some large washer type devices to brake the spool and slow it down.

Pencil
Crocs

That's literally all you need.

I've done this. But for baitcast reels.

Now that you mention it, I remember having to do something to keep the spool snug so it wouldn't free wheel and make a mess. I forgot about that. I'm also bad about not changing line so it's not a task I do often. Maybe I've changed line in my reels once in 20 years. Obviously, I'm not fishing for trophies. Lol.

Keep in mind, if you own a boat, you can always put it into gear and slowly feed line out off your reel and then slowly reel it back in to get the twists out.
