Handgun safe for bedroom?

Needing something to hold a handgun (probably a 1911) for personal protection, so preferably something quick to open. We live in a log home, so I'd like to bolt the safe to wall so it can't be easily stolen, or picked up by curious tiny hands. Any recommendations?

I really like my Fort Knox. Mechanical push button lock, fast and no battery.
Has cable for fastening to wall.

I second the Fort Knox. No batteries to swap out, all mechanical and built like a tank.

Side note: I had a name brand battery powered safe a few years ago and it failed when I needed it. My fault for not swapping the batteries regularly but in any case had to go to my "secondary".

What's the story that goes with needing the firearm but not being able to get to it?

Yeah. You seemingly did not die, so that's good.

Correct. Not dead….yet

Safes in night stands on both sides of the bed. Moved to the second safe once the first failed. Lost about 5-8 seconds in the transition. It all worked out

The more secure a gun is, the less accessable it is.

True. But that trade-off is obviously worth it if you have kids in the house.

Obviously I agree with having guns secured/safe etc. However, I would have one out at night. You aren't going to have as much time to react as you think you are. You arent going to be able to see and you're going to be at least half asleep.

With the littles it can be a challenge, but the time to start training them on not touching guns is now. Especially the older ones.

V-line makes similar models with the mechanical lock. I have several and have used these V-lines for years with no problems whatsoever. Easy and quick to open.

I have Vaultek's basic slider safe bolted to my night stand. It's electronic and not the most secure safe in the world, but it's discreet and keeps the little hands away. I went electric despite my preference for mechanical locks, because electric safes are generally less bulky and quicker to open. If you were really worried about it, you could just open it every night and close it up in the morning. I just check function at least once per week and keep the battery charged.

Not sure if it helps but my old Winchester safe takes a battery but also plugs into AC power. The batteries in that have lasted almost a decade, in fact, now that you mention it I need to check those out. But the point it is issues AC power most of the time and battery for backup. I like the mechanical option posted above though.

Why do you guys bolt these small safes to nightstands? I have mine behind my nightstand but never considered bolting it to it. If it's to avoid theft, wouldn't they just steal the nightstand with the safe attached?

I have mine bolted in my nightstand, but mine is not to prevent theft.

Mine is bolted to the night stand for attachment purposes, not to prevent theft.

What make/model failed?

I have a vaultek MXi that has been working well for me. Once I have a nightstand that holds it and I'm happy with the location, I will make use of the holes/bolts it has to attach it to a wall stud from the inside. Not going to stop a determined thief or one that has an angle grinder, but better than nothing.

Forget the night stand safe. You need one of these headboards.

If only! Looks like a good place to hide the good snacks I don't want to share with the hubby, too!

GF had an electronic battery operated gun safe and lost the key.

Do not recommend.
