We killed a chicken via mosquitoes in grad school.

Coolest thing I got.

I'm not a on the cutting edge of makeup and shampoo, but if we don't know what can go into makeup / haircare products at this point what are we doing?

There is always R&D with new formulations. You don't survive unless you can innovate, and innovation requires things that are icky at times.

Errbody want their meds, health products, and makeup but no one wants the ugly things that come with it in their backyard.
My wife's first job out of A&M was in a genetics lab in the hospital district across the street from Rice. Pretty sure the building had/has an A&M seal on it but lots of different things going on in there.

Anyway she worked there for a couple of years and one of her jobs was to kill the mice. She killed them by the truckload. It was freaking wild. I went up there and watched her do it one day and it was some cold blooded *****

I have no issues killing animals when it's necessary, I'm a hunter like everyone else here. But we know what works in a bar of soap and we aren't making groundbreaking leaps of technology in shampoo or makeup.

Maybe it's a legal requirement, we know those are always correct

There are already 5 pretty large primate facilities in Texas. These facilities a breeding facilities mostly. They are Specific pathogen-free (SPF). Research facilities buy these animals to do their test work on because they know what they're getting. That's why you can't use strays, no idea what the animal's genetic makeup is.

Charles Rivers is just south of Houston and they are the ones wanting to expand their facility. They already have a small one there. Even if they did get out, they would probably just sit on the outside of the enclosure. Also, these facilities are pretty secure due to all the peta folks.

Yeah, it sort of is. They're fed from birth by caretakers, not like they know how to fend for themselves plus primates are very troop-oriented. They want to be in groups. This isn't a prison break.

The primate facility in San Antonio had some baboons get out about 10 years ago, they sat on the overpass 100 yards away just watching cars go by on 410. They didn't run around trashing things

so, there have been literal thousands of escaped species that have become invasive species around the world. but, there's almost no chance of that happening this time. right.

One of my property lines is the same creek that the proposed primate facility will drain into. About 20 miles downstream. So I've got a vested interest.

My understanding is they plan to have a monkey farm-not researching deadly diseases. They do the scary stuff in downtown Galveston at the CDC level 4 research facility.

So as a downstream neighbor, no different concerns than a chicken farm , dairy, or feedlot - sewage lagoon overflows being #1.

Plus TCEQ has recently stepped up their game on rural creek water quality. FWIW.

I'm more concerned about the potential waste stream from the massive Phillips 66 refinery a few miles downstream on the same creek as the proposed monkey farm. Their environmental history hasn't been good.

I feel these facilities are more secure than a zoo for sure. You have primary containment enclosures and secondary containment enclosures. Then you have containment around the whole facility. I'm sure they have an escape now and then but it wouldn't be an animal with any disease or carrying anything. This is a breeding facility for healthy research models.

i'm not worried about disease. i'm just pointing out that animals always get out. and they do leave their "areas". are the odds really low at this proposed place? yes, probably. but, remember a hurricane ended with pythons taking over the Everglades. (yes, i know unscrupulous people have also released them).

but, even the family dog has been known to get out and wind up feral.

About 30 years ago there was a colony of Japanese Snow Monkeys living in the south Texas brush country. They had somehow gotten out of a research facility in the area. I hunted on a ranch where they would see them occasionally and the owner did not like them. The one I saw reminded me a lot of a kid named Ernie I went to school with. No way I could ever shoot one.

ETA that somebody can link an article but they lived for many years feral in the area. Not sure if a colony still exists today.

This is the most likely scenario. There is also a BSL 4 primate facility in San antonio. These monkeys are bred and raised specially and the research money budgets in the 5 figures for each animal due to breeding, Genetics, age etc.

I am not saying I would want a monkey farm in my backyard, but they will not be carrying TB or Marburg. You should worry more about TB from the migrants crossing the border.

Several of the facilities in south Texas have had escapes. There are wild monkey populations down there now.

...and soap used to be caustic lye that was made at home and could burn the hell out of you chemically.

Point is that R&D is a very real thing and never going away, especially with new compounds always being made and existing ones getting taken off the market periodically.

It's been 10 years since I did the project on the facility near Agua Dulce...but every one of my workers had to have regular boosters, I think TB may have been one of them.

Yes, they make sure you don't have anything the primates can catch. They're not worried about you catching anything from them. I have to have all my TB testing updated every 6 months before going into research facilities for work.

Wouldn't it make more sense to put these in west Texas somewhere? It seems highly unlikely they could escape.

Monkey facilities seem to regularly have issues.

There are several islands with feral populations, aren't there?

The time I remember this happening was way more than 10years. So it has happened more than once.
Those primates are no different than us. They were waiting on the food trucks to come.

Flocculation is a process that involves bringing together microalgae cells by either neutralising, bridging, or netting them to form larger, denser clumps that can be separated from the liquid medium. This technique can be achieved using chemical, biological, or electro-flocculation methods.

Live mosquitoes for experiments have to be fed right?

Well they get to eat chicken. Unfortunately if you forget to take the chicken out of the cage it doesn't do well (stuffed into pantyhose).
