Looks like a snow goose but that bill and legs look awfully black. Have a clearer pic?

No. But they definitely look black in person. I'm confused.

After looking up yes. Smaller than snow goose. Black markings. Thank you. Texags comes through.

Even if their beak is warty, it's not black. And legs aren't either.

First goose I ever shot was a Ross

Quite embarrassing story. I was with a friend scouting a rice field on a his family's land in Hamshire, TX. Out of nowhere, a cloud of snows and specks jumps off a nearby roost and flies directly towards us on the deck. It was in-season so we both had our shotguns.

We drop into prone position and wait for what felt like forever. When my buddy called the shot, we both raise up and empty our guns. I can still see the sight pictures in my head.

6 shots later, hundreds of geese in a vortex screaming above. And on the ground, one Ross goose.

We were teenagers when it happened…still comes up

Agree.

Fun fact for you… The name Ross Goose is changing.

Per Audubon:

"A small but growing contingent of birders had been aware for years that these names could be harmful or exclusionary, given many honor people now understood to have committed racist acts, and had begun to favor moving away from them. But the effort took on new meaning and haste during the racial reckoning that swept across the country and birding world in 2020."

Only band I've ever gotten was off a Ross goose. Not sure if my Dad, Uncle, or I got it but I wound up with it.

"North American birds that were named after people will be given new monikers. The American Ornithological Society plans in 2024 to begin renaming up to 80 bird species, and three waterfowl speciesRoss's goose, Barrow's goldeneyes, and Steller's eidersare likely to be among the birds that are given new names.Nov 17, 2023"

The ones with not so flattering terms for people I kind of get(there are a few birds and fish with squaw in the name). The ones named after people that they are changing, where does it end? I'm sure in a few hundred years people will look back on things we are doing and think what idiots, I can't belive they were doing "x".

Heres the article:

Just another step in the march to denigrate our forefathers and revise the country's history.

Sounds like the Audubon Society is about to do their last annual Christmas bird count on my land and reservoirs. I'll miss seeing the list of birds each year they see and identify.
