This one has been in the works a while, but i finally got it finished up and delivered.

The top is a grafted claro/eastern black walnut slab from an orchard in california:

The framing is eastern black walnut, with the panels being some of the most intensive walnut burl I could get my hands on:

graft line in the top slab:

toeboard/hidden drawers:

full extension soft close guides:

I did sliding dovetails on the drawer joints. Simple, strong, and a pain to get to fit just right..

Amazing work as always. The figure in that burl is spectacular. Great touch with the toe board drawers, very nice!

But I LOVE seeing the graft line in the slab. That is stripy fascinating. I would love to see it in person, and get a close look at how the fibers melded over time. Amazing

its not that bad. The two cabinets, the front panel, and the top all break down, with the connections being machine bolts/threaded inserts between each piece.

Ill post when I can get around to it, but the same Aggie for the desk got a mesquite coffee table about 55"x60"x1.5" thick. That thing was a complete pain in the butt to move.

Got it, I figured that may be the case because otherwise...it'd be tough and bulky. Looks fantastic!

As usual, that is a beautiful piece. What do you use to finish it, and how durable is the finish?

i used to do wipe-on poly or varnish, then a few years ago switched to water based spray finishes (typically lacquer). But about a year or two ago i started using solvent based conversion varnishes. The dry much faster, and have a much better off-the-gun finish. They polish well and are some of the most durable out there. For the desk I did lacquer on the lower unit and a post-catalyzed conversion varnish on the top.

Agrams, I love it when you start threads because that means we get to see your work.
I wish I had your skills.
That desk is a thing of beauty. Whoever got this got a work of art.

I would have never imagined seeing a graft line in a piece of furniture. Spectacular!

Man that's an heirloom piece. If I had that I might be motivated to keep my desk organized. Amazing work
