CZ 457 Scout

Dang…I've got twin 7 yo girls who are ready

Don't think I can spend $1000 for two

Might be going with the Henry

If by "going with Henry" you mean the Mini-bolt consider this:
Yes more upfront, but the CZ Scout can grow with them more than the mini bolt. Simple mag change on the CZ takes it from a single shot to 5, 10, 15, or 25 round capacity. And stock is easily upgradable when they are older and need a longer LOP. Also added bonus, it's threaded for potential use with a suppressor.

With the Mini Bolt you are pretty much stuck with its configuration as there is a more limited aftermarket.

I've got a 5 and a 6 yo I'm looking ahead for. Personally, I want the CZ scout, but my wallet says Savage Rascal it is.

Agree with the bolt action or single shot. Make them work for and be intentional for a second shot.

My son started with a simple Ruger 10-22... still keeping that guy around. Best off the shelf learner gun.

I started off with a Winchester model 67 (I believe) that was given to me by my great uncle. I loved that single-shot, bolt-action rifle because it was mine. It took a long time to go through ammo, so those 500 round bricks lasted!

I still shoot the Win 67. My favorite 22. Was my great grandfathers. Both my boys started on it. But it's a very long gun, with a very long LOP. It's comfortable for me as an adult. Safe for them and me in that it's a single shot. But they struggled to hold and aim it. And it is slow to shoot over all.

The first 22 I bought that was "theirs" was a Henry youth 22 lever action. Short gun, short lop.

It's a repeater, but you still have to cycle the lever (which is smooth and easy). So there's no pull the trigger twice in a row danger, even though there are rounds in the mag. And if they cycle a round, it is clearly evident from a distance.

No safety, but the exposed hammer let's you know if it's ready to go bang.

It's their favorite to shoot now. Age 6 and 10.

Our kids also started with a 10-22. We saved it to teach our grandkids.

Saved it…. I killed a hog with my 10/22 last weekend. I learned with a old Browning SA-22 since it was short enough. It was too heavy so I had to rest it on my knee. The SA-11 has my favorite iron sights.

Baby 15-22 with a brace is kid sized.

I got a stamp on mine and have a regular adjustable stock.

It might be a hot rod by the time the grand kids come along. I started building it as a back up steel challenge gun for me

Just bought a Savage Mark II bolt action with a Bushnell scope and threaded muzzle. I put a Form 1 .22 can on it and it's a blast to shoot. Sounds like a pellet gun with cheap Remington .22LR.

Definitely recommend a bolt action single shot or magazine-fed rifle over a semi-auto for beginner shooters. Check the used market for an older Remington or Winchester.

I learned to shoot on a Remington 341 that my late father bought from his uncle in the 1950s for $10. It's a helluva gun. Can't hardly buy 'em like that anymore. And certainly not for $10.

Slight tangent from op, my kids are going to be shooting 22s competitively with 4h this year. Seems like a decent excuse to buy a new rifle. Any recommendations on decent quality competition rifles sub $500? It'd have to be bolt action and with peep sights

If you are just wanting something out of the box Savage is my favorite in 22lr bolts.

I don't think it matters if it's out of the box or pieced together. Just try to keep it under 500 because I have to buy 2

I grew up with a Ruger 10/22 and still have it. But if I had to buy another .22lr I would get a Tikka t1x.

I just bought a Rossi RS22 with a threaded barrel. Have not had a chance to try it out though.

Any decent bolt action.

Teach them the value of accuracy, volume of fire can come later when they are more responsible and have the basics of marksmanship down.

The CZ lines are very good guns, as are some of the older Winchester bolt actions.

Good rifle but rifle, sights, and gunsmith fee to install would be $700-800.

Palmetto has the CZ on sale if you haven't settled on a rifle yet. Should be able to add a peep sight fairly easily

A former Marine sniper'now Texas Game Warden, gave me the idea to build a training rifle for my Grandkids. CZ455 with Vortex Diamondback tactical and a .22 specific suppressor. Easy rifle to handle,no recoil and no bang. shoots dime size groups at 50 yds and 50 cent groups at 100. Youngest kids still on the bench, older kids have found a really good "call gun". Best gun in my safe

This! I bought a 455 for my son for his graduation present and sighted it in for him. Now we staple up the target and shoot the staples at 50 yards. Most fun gun I've ever shot.

I learned on an ITHACA MODEL 49, 22 SINGLE SHOT LEVER ACTION SADDLE RIFLE. Short length was perfect for a kid. There were a ton made in the 50's & 60's and should be easy to find. Loaded one cartridge in the top. Shoots shorts, regular, and long rifle.22. Hammer action and decent trigger for a kid. I killed many squirrels, rabbits, etc. with that little gun. It got stolen in a home burglary 35 years ago.
