I didn't know the FDA cared about dogs, but they published a list of food brands that cause cardiomyopathy. Most of the brands listed are considered premium brands and advertise themselves as being grain free. Here's the list and a link.

Nutro is a big player. That one surprises me.

Would like to see the study which links these foods to cardiomyopathy.

Before being accused of being a "premium" food shill, I feed Pro Plan to my pups. I have fed TOTW, Merrick, Acana, and Orijen in the past, but always moved back to Pro Plan. Just couldn't see spending the extra money for those brands, but personally have nothing against them, at least at this point.

Here's more details on the study.

I feed Purina Proplan, the above diets are likely "grain free" which has been linked to cardiomyopathies. This has been a topic in veterinary medicine for years. I'm not a nutritionist or cardiologist, so I have no idea how/why there is a link between those diets and this heart condition.

I generally recommend Proplan or Hill's Science Diet, both these brands have decades of research and science behind them. I'm not a big fan of boutique diets, mostly because I don't think they are any "better".

Rachael Ray has a dog food product line?

Also, they misspelled her first name. I don't want to be 'that guy', but for a professional organization trying to push supposed technically competent information, I judge harshly for this. I now question the validity of everything in the list.

Probably a flyer at a vet office.

The website linked has her name spelled correctly. Maybe you shouldn't be too quick to judge.

I find this interesting. Zoos supposedly went the opposite direction because they were killing off animals by providing diets and treats with grain / carb to animals that wouldn't have eaten it in the wild.

Also known as canine flatulence plan! (Although not as bad as Bil-Jac!)

Our dogs love this stuff, so hopefully it's vet-approved.

This is a 4 year old story from Canada.

I don't have much to offer, other than that my wife recently got out of the pet food industry with a smaller company that competed against a lot of the higher-end names in that list. There was a lot of flip flopping on grains being good or being bad, but it sounds like the consensus now is that grain-free food is linked to more issues than the grain-inclusive.

FWIW, we now feed Fromm. Not sure if it's a grain-free recipe or not.

I don't keep up with dog food brands to any extent, but I wonder how many of these are cottage/private business brands? I notice none of the major players made the list (unless some of these are sub-brands of a major brand). For example, Purina is owned by Nestle who is major player on the global scene. I would imagine it would take a lot to get someone like them to make a list like this.

Then again, maybe I am just a conspiracy theorist ;-)

I switched to the Salmon and Sweet potato at Costco and my lab loves it. ~$40 for a 35lb bag vs $100 for a 40lb bag of pro plan is a no brainer

I have an English bulldog. Ten years is considered an old dog in that breed. I feed her Blue Buffalo.

She's 13 years old. Didn't know I was killing her.

Here is more current information. Dilated Cardiomyopathy in Dogs: Closer to Solving the Mystery?

Also, from the FDA:
Quote:

December 23, 2022:

FDA does not intend to release further public updates until there is meaningful new scientific information to share. A count of reports of DCM in dogs submitted to FDA as of November 1, 2022, has been added to Questions & Answers: FDA's Work on Potential Causes of Non-Hereditary DCM in Dogs. FDA has followed up on a subset of these reports, but is unable to investigate every report to verify or confirm the reported information. While adverse event numbers can be a potential signal of an issue with an FDA regulated product, by themselves, they do not supply sufficient data to establish a causal relationship with reported product(s). FDA continues to encourage research and collaboration by academia, veterinarians, and industry.

Quote:

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has identified 16 brands of dog foods the majority of them labelled "grain free" that it says are most frequently associated with a potentially deadly canine heart condition.

Canine dilated cardiomyopathy, or DCM, is a disease that causes the muscle wall of a dog's heart to thin, weakening the organ and making it harder to pump blood. Congestive heart failure, a buildup of fluid in the chest and abdomen, can result. Affected dogs may seem tired, lose weight and suddenly collapse.

The FDA's ongoing investigation into a "potential connection between certain diets and cases of canine heart disease" focused on 515 reports of DCM in dogs received between Jan. 1, 2014 and April 30.

Of the dog-food brands on the FDA's list, 91 percent of the products were labelled grain-free (did not contain corn, soy, wheat, rice, barley or other grains), while 93 per cent contained peas, lentils (including chickpeas and beans), or potatoes (including sweet potatoes).

Canids are omnivores and would have grain in their diet theoretically.

4health is Tractor Supply's store brand and I bought some on sale a while back. My dog's stomach is pretty stout, he feasts on ripe cow bones he finds on leased public land. But it gave him the squirts pretty bad.

I buy whatever is cheapest at HEB. Usually Purina Dog Chow. Dogs are 12 and 13.
