Was pricing out deer blinds and debating on the extra add ons:

Gun rest is an extra $400
Sun visors an extra $300
Magnetic Curtains an extra $450
They have carpet but carpet up to the window level is an extra $500

Out of the extras I am considering the visors and carpet to the window level but really don't know if it is worth it. What advice do you guys have on must features?

I would just take the carpet unless you want to carpet it yourself. Carpet is a must for me in a good blind for the noise reduction. Sandbag on the window instead of shooting rail. I've never thought a sun visor or tint was necessary, but I guess it's all personal preference depending where you will be looking and if you have big trees around. I do like a shelf to put binos and a camera on though.

Also, magnetic curtains? This the Martha Stewart Edition blind?

How much for a toilet? Currently in the blind covered up in deer and the Jimmy Dean biscuit I had for breakfast is ready to make it's exit.

You need a hefty steel sack garbage bag. I hunted with a friend for years who would keep one in his hunting bag for this purpose. I never hunted his stand after he told us that…

This thread makes me laugh...full disclosure I have a King Ranch blind with carpet, shelves etc that I bought used but I just think about explaining this to my grandfather who hunted out of lean-to pieces of plywood with ring tail crap.

It is nice to have a heater/phone etc these days. I remember freezing my ass off and starring at plywood about 3' in front of my face because the bucket I was sitting on wasn't tall enough for my 8 year old self to see out the window.

All of that said, I'd go with the carpet and shelfing.

Damn I built a 4x6 blind 6ft up for less than half the price of all those extras.

If you have any basic hand tool knowledge and can navigate Home Depot you can do all of that yourself for a faction of the price.

Carpet on the walls is huge if you're going to have kids or undisciplined people in there.

But, you can do all that crap yourself for a fraction of the cost.

One of the reasons I prefer to build blinds myself. Windows are too high for kids on pretty much all of the factory blinds. Much easier for an adult to lean down and into a rifle than a kid to try to stretch taller.

This years build is 6x8 & has heat, a/c, lights, carpet, dry erase board kick panel, dry storage, shelves, hooks, and a final rest shooting system. THE kid blind.

Is this a seriously post?! You can make an excellent ground blind out of a single 6' wood fence panel. $75 at lowes!

Here is what I would do if I had the FY money you seem to have to consider buying all the extras....take all that money and buy a second blind. Pull your cap down a little and put on sunglasses to replace the sun visor, go to a carpet place and pick up some remnants to put in it along the wall, and get you some pipe insulation to put on the sill once you open the window. There you go...problem solved.

The carpet idea is interesting. Does it match the curtains?

Nice. We have one blind big enough for two adults to lie down in. So I've often just brought a sleeping bag and crashed out in it the night before. It's insulated so it gets warm in there pretty quick with the windows closed.

Gun rest is an extra $400
I personally just lean my gun in the corner, but if you are hell bent on having a rack, just buy this and mount it in the corner. Would take all of 30 minutes and save you $300.

Sun visors an extra $300
If you are talking about the awning / rain guard, I do like having them.

Magnetic Curtains an extra $450
Don't mess with curtains. They are annoying and blow in the wind most of the time. Get some camo one-way film and put them on your windows. Much better solution in my opinion.

I did the carpet on the walls myself. You can find new, leftover carpet from jobs on Craigslist for about $50 to do all your walls. Measure, cut, and glue it to the wall. Advice......get the really short carpet. Easier to sweep and the grassburs don't stick in it as bad.

You do these things and it saves you a chunk of money and only takes very little time. Just my two cents.

That's the plan. I put a locking RV door on it and it's all r-19 insulated.

I built a 6x6

  • Deerview windows
  • Just finished up making curtains out of camo netting with magnets
  • Caldwell sandbags on the 2x4 window sill for shooting
  • Rubber floor mats instead of carpet - easier to clean and still dampen the noise
  • 25w Solar panel with a battery maintainer - I use it to charge my spare feeder batteries, as well as run a USB fan and phone charger
  • Various hooks, etc. to hang stuff on, lean gun against, whatever
  • Beer can holders for my Lone Star Light

I do need to add a short 2x4 below one of my windows for a footrest - I think my naps will be better that way.

Other than that, a porch and a short set of stairs out the door so in and out is easy and my old fatass doesn't worry about falling over.

The standard pricing for the blinds is not bad. They are also built to last forever which is what I want.

The extras I thought were ridiculous on price and things that I can add in myself if I want. I was more or less asking about the features that you guys have found helpful or nice.

I have never hunted out of anything other than a makeshift plywood blind with zero features or from a fallen oak tree that I used for a brace. I am tired of dealing with the elements and want something that the wife and kids can also enjoy. In my older age I want comfort but I don't want to throw unnecessary money away. You guys pretty much confirmed what I thought about it.

I can build my own blind but I don't want something that I will have to fix or maintain every few years.

It's always nice to have one really nice blinds for the family and friends. You can always upgrade others later. Kids will enjoy it and maybe you can get them to spend more time in the field with you. I get it.
